Uninstalling McAfee causing problems with Windows Sidebar

Correction of prev thread title. Seen several threads on this subject with kind of similar problems. Tried several fixes but no joy. Problem arises when I uninstall McAfee security center. Windows Sidebar stops working. Tried restore point and that restores everthing ok but when I try uninstalling again, same problem occurs. Tried sfc /scannow and problems cannot be fixed (http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html) Tried reading CBS log (How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7) but cannot open CBS log file. Tried CC cleaner to fix registry but no joy there either. Any help would be really appreciated...

Thanks Ed. I had already tried that following McAfee's own instructions i.e. uninstall first then run MCPR.exe. Anyhow tried it on its own as you suggested but still no joy :(

Windows sidebar starts up albeit all the gadgets don't work or display properly.

Let's tackle SFC. If you've got corrupted files, we need to know what they are.

What's the error you encounter when you "can't open CBS log"? Can you upload a screenshot?

Ed

Not sure if screenshot will help much but attached anyhow.

Issue is when I follow the command string as outlined in the SFC tool support page - nothing happens... If I try and 'manually' open/click on the cbs.log file I get a pop-up message saying "Access is denied". This even when I am logged on as administrator. The only way I have been able to view the file is by copying it to a different location and opening it with Notepad. In it by searching for the text string "[SR] Cannot repair member file" I see several events all pointing to a tcpmon.ini file. This really confuses me i.e. this I believe is a print/monitor ini file and nothing to do with Windows Sidebar...?? The sfc /scannow report says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them".

In the meantime I went back to McAfee (I still have support until this weekend). Result was they passed the buck saying this was a Microsoft problem not theirs! This despite my insistence the problem only occurs when I unistall 'their' product ...and if I reinstall it the problem goes away! They promised to escalate but surprise surprise they failed to call back...

Hi Sav10,

1. You forgot to attach the screenshot, shouldn't need it now though.

2. When you say "nothing happens" when you follow the command string, did you carry on with:

Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
edit sfcdetails.txt
?

The previous command just creates a file in the directory that the Command Prompt starts in (usually C:\Users\Userid, but check it out by opening the command prompt and seeing what directory it's showing); you should find the sfcdetails.txt there.

3. Alternatively, you can do the same thing now by typing in the command prompt:

findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" Your_Directory\cbs.log >Your_Directory\sfcdetails.txt

where Your_Directory is whatever directory you copied it to. It'll create the sfcdetails.txt file in the same directory.

In either case, please upload it.

Ed

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. !!!

This is the result of latest SFC scan. Thanks so much Ed. You're a star!

The post-mortem on all this is in actual fact whether replacing the corrupted tcpmon.ini file would have resolved the windows sidebar issue is not conclusive i.e. McAfee eventually came back to me yesterday (after much insistence) and they cured the windows sidebar problem by updating Java and running the following commands:

regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll

followed by:
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 sbdrop.dll
regsvr32 wlsrvc.dll

This however DID NOT resolve the previously reported corrupt files found by the SFC scan. Following resolution of the windows sidebar problem, I ran the scan again and the same problem was reported. This would indicate the sidebar problem may not have been picked up by the SFC scan...?

In any case all problems outlined have now been resolved. Thanks again Ed (and McAfee). :)

Glad to hear it.

Did you replace the tcpmon.ini in this directory?

C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-p..rtmonitor-tcpmonini_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_d278d2aaa749970e

No. I did a search and replaced it in C:\Windows\System32. I did a sfc scan afterwards and it came up good so I did not bother with any other.
