USB and Ethernet drivers stop working after reboot

Integrated PC

New Member
Hi, thanks in advance for your help. I have searched and tried many things but none have solved my issue yet.

Here's the deal. When vista boots my usb and ethernet drivers don't work. I have to plug in a ps2 keyboard and mouse to log in. I can then go to device manager and check the drivers. They all say that the device cannot start. I can then disable the items and re-enable them and they work fine. This occurs at each and every reboot.

I have tried new drivers and flashed my bios. I have tried editing a value in my registry that another forum suggested (changed and "inf" to "system32" at the end of a value, I can look it up if needed). I then uninstalled a months worth of Windows updates and still no dice. Something is not allowing my motherboard drivers to work upon boot up.

Mobo: Asus P5Q PRO TURBO
CPU: Intel Q9400 Quad
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate x64

Let me know what else you might need to know if anything to help me out. Thanks

Heyy, i dont want to be the first to jump on this lol ;).
Has this only just started to happen, or has it been doing it for a while?
If its just started to happen you could try a system restore to a previous date when it was working.

Hope this helps you,
Daniel =)

Thanks for the advice. No dice on the restore point and the boot log just shows that the drivers did not load.

I forgot to mention that this has happened once before. A few months back it occured but I just reformatted because I wanted to anyways. Now this morning this happens again.

Here is the boot log:

They all seem to be "libusb0.sys"

I don't have a libusb0.sys on my system. Sounds like a Linux thing.
Almost all the google references mention the Ming compiler or Linux or RPMs, which is a Linux packaging system.

System file checker finds no integrity problems. I am gonna look up this file that keeps coming up. Also, somewhere else mentioned Driver Signature issues with Windows. I disabled integrity checks through command prompt but that didn't work either.

Have you tried the universal fix? Boot into safe mode, remove the device in device manager.. then reboot? That's usually worth a try.

The other thing is, see if this file is even on your system. When I took Norton av off my machine it kept waiting to load drivers for it because those settings were still in the registry. I had to use the removal tool to clean that out.

Maybe also try CCleaner Registry fix tool.

Conspicuous by their absence on your Bootlog list are:

USBD.sys
USBPORT.sys

On my system these are shown as drivers for the USB Root Hub and USB Universal Host Controllers.

Same on yours?

Don't know why they wouldn't be loading. Try uninstalling the devices and rebooting and see if they load.

Then look at Event viewer and see what errors or changes were made to the system around the time the problem started.

Gonna try the safe mode idea.

The files aren't missing though. I never have to reinstall the drivers. I just disable and then re-enable the devices and they work fine.

If anyone else has an idea toss it my way and I will give it a shot. Going to install Win7 x64 if I don't fix this soon. I do like the challenge though.

I didn't mean they were missing, just missing from the bootlog list, meaning the system wasn't loading them at boot time.

Yes, you are right. My usb drivers are usbd.sys and the other but are not in my bootlog. Does this help you to come to a possible solution?

I take it the safe mode trick didn't work. The next thing I would try is search the registry for libusb0.sys and see where that's coming from. If you are paranoid about RegEdit you can use a safe scanner from here:

RegScanner Tool: Alternative to RegEdit find/search of Windows

Something is trying to load the wrong drivers. Sure you never had Linux running from Windows desktop or something weird?

Thank you Miles and Ed. I finally got it and sort of understand what is going on. Oh, and it's fixed.

I work on iPhones and have a recovery mode loop fixer that has an addition that I forgot I just installed. It is call LIBUSB.SYS and had to be installed with XP compatibility mode to work correctly. This explains why it was in the SysWow64 file.

Now here is the question. What do you think was confusing Windows to try and boot those files as my chipset drivers instead of the correct ones? Do you think it was just the coincidental file name? I am curious to know.

Once again, thanks for helping me walk through this.

1. How did you fix it?

2. Sounds like that iPhone App screwed something up.

I just uninstalled the iphone app. What can I do to keep the app and not have the error. Just rename the registry values??

I would try a forum more specific to that application if you can find it. The chances are better finding a user of that app who has overcome your problem than the other way around. Usually any software like that is going to have a user forum.
