Packard Bell Vista reinstallation Problems

Hello, I have a problem with my Packard Bell ISTART 2380 and someone can help as it's driving me mad!

Due to the fact that my Packard Bell ISTART 2380 contained many viruses, I finally decided to to do a complete recovery install.

I am currently trying to recover my Packard Bell PC but I'm having considerable problems doing so. Firstly, I created a 'DVDrecovery disc' using Packard Bell's Smart Restore console and I also downloaded and created a 'Vista recovery iso file' from neosmart.net onto a DVD using an application called Imgburn. I burned this iso file at two different speeds as I have read that burning an iso file at certain speeds, particlulary high speeds, can affect the actual files contained in the iso file. possibly making them currupt and unreadable when doing an install from it.

Messages I have been receiving over the course of trying to solve this problem, include; 'BOOTMGR is missing' and 'Windows cannot open the required file E:\Sources\install.wim'. Error code 0x80070002. I don't quite understand why this is happening considering that this Packard Bell model, like many, now come with a special partition as part of the Hard drive (called a Boot partition? or 'X' drive) where I can only presume all the necessary files required for a successful restore or even a full install of Vista itself reside.

I have gone through the standard Packard Bell recovery console to repair Windows Vista Home Premium and also to reinstall it completely but it doesn't resolve things at all.

I have also tried using the Command prompt option to repair and rebuild the BCD store but that doesn't work. Looking at some info online, this particular procedure seems to differ a little from user to user. For example;
bootrec.exe
bcdedit /export c:\bcd_backup
c:
cdboot
attrib bcd -s -h -r
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec./rebuildbcd

When I type the 6th entry 'ren c:'... I get the following message - 'a duplicate file exists, or the file cannot be found'.

I don't quite know how to resolve this matter other than by buying an actual an new Vista OS DVD which I can only pressume is a direct physical copy of what is already on the special boot partition within my Packard Bell hard drive. Has anyone else had this problem with their Packard Bell when trying to reinstall Windows Vista?

Any advice or help in resolving this matter would be really greatly appreciated. I hope someone can help.

Hello mtm75, welcome to Vista Forums

Instead of trying to recover from the disk, try to recover directly from the recovery Partition; have a look at the directions below, they were written for an HP machine but the principle is the same; try a couple times using the F11 key but if that doesn't seem to be right try other " F " keys as it seems you have no other options.
Please be sure to post back to keep us informed.

Be advised that this will take the machine back to the point when you first took it of the box.
The "HP Recovery Center" will give you the option to send to backup anything you
don't want to lose, so have backup media available to use if you choose this option.

With the machine off press the power button, as soon as you do that start tapping the F11 key.
It may take several attempts to do this, if the first attempt fails, try again.
That should take you to the HP Recovery Center. When there just follow the prompts.
It is pretty much self explanatory. From the time you boot into F11 (not counting
any backups you choose to make) you should be back on a working desktop in about
30 minutes. After it restarts just follow the prompts again to finish the process.

If your first option is system restore select no, which should take you to system recovery.

Hi mtm75 (and Bare Foot Kid),

Just to confuse things:

I've been reading the Packard Bell manual ftp://ftp.packardbell.com/pub/itemnr/6995740401/6995740401.pdf. According to the Packard Bell Recovery Program section (p. 52), the process seems to be the reverse of HP's.

You may use Smart Restore or, if Windows does not start correctly, the F11 key to start the recovery process.
If these neither of these options allow you to start the recovery process, you may use Recovery (or Master)
DVDs or an external drive (that contains recovery data, see page 20).
•Use the Packard Bell Recovery option in Smart Restore:
a. Click on ‘Start’ > All Programs > Packard Bell - Security & Support.
b. Select Packard Bell Recovery, then click on the Packard Bell Recovery button.
So, the F11 procedure (p. 54) is used to restore from the Recovery disks, not the Recovery partition.

Hi, Bare foot kid, Ed Canuck and Theog. Many thanks for your replies.

Regarding the F kye options, there are only 3 of which are dispayed on the intro PB screen as follows; F2 'to enter BIOS set up', F3 to 'open disk drive' and F8 'to display Boot order'. I also tried, following advice from PB support, ALT + F10 and F11 by itself with neither having no obvious function.

The stage I am at right now is I have absolutely no access to the OS other than I can see it when I go into the PB recovery mode. The way Packard Bell have partitioned the hard drive (D:) (and there is only one) is confusing. If I remember correctly, there is 3 or 4 partitions. I have been in touch with PB and they so far have not been of very much help to me. Only suggestion they've come up with was to start from the recovery discs, which I've done. Or by a new set at £50. I don't why I should as the partition they created on this PC should contain everything I need for a clean install? Before starting this nightmare, I did successfully create recovery discs using PB's recovery suite but they don't to seem to have any affect as it seems to be unable to open a particular file E:\Sources\install.wim. It states the file does not exist. I'm kind of stuck with nothing else to try at the moment. I'm convinced it can be sorted but just don't know how. Any further help or ideas will be appreciated. Thanks.

Vista Reinstallation Problems

Hi everyone,
A while back I had posted another thread entitled 'Packard Bell Vista reinstallation Problems'. and it was never resolved but I appreciated the help.

My situation remains the same. However, I have since bought a fresh copy of Vista Home Premium Edition (OEM) and I am currently having problems installing it.

Having inserted the original Vista DVD I followed on from the on screen instructions. Before doing that, I set my DVD drive as a master boot so it would read from the disc first and not the hard drive as it is currently accessible. As I mentioned in my previous post, 'Packard Bell Vista reinstallation Problems', I was unable to repair Vista using the recovery disc that I made before the PC went down. So I thought if I bought an original copy of Vista I would be able to repair from that.

Basically, I don't want to install a fresh copy of Vista, I just want to repair my original installed copy from the original disc. Even though I have an original copy of Vista, the PC still can't find the following file; 'File D:\Sources\install.wim' and tells me an error code; '0x80070002'. So I'm basically baffled by this since the files should exist on the Vista disc, shouldn't they?

I am able to view and access the original HD drives but only during the repair console procedure and no further than that. I suspect the original Packard Bell recover partition is damaged but can't this be fixed through some sort procedure similiar to what I have been doing?

I've done the system recovery/repair console options procedure and other options using Windows standard recovery process and still nothing. I still can not seem to pass through without some sort of message telling me of a problem.

Can anyone help?
