Can't remove a copy of "Recent Items" from my desktop

Ok, so I was trying to get rid of the "Recent Items" list from the startup (found the option to allow it or not, so that's not a problem anymore) but while doing so, I went to the source (/appdata/roaming/microsoft/windows) and dragged the icon to my desktop to see if that would work. What happened was I created another "Recent Items" icon on my desktop, which I can't move or delete. Plus, I still have the original one which I also can't move or delete. I don't want the one on my desktop anymore, is there any way to get rid of it? Thanks!

Hallo KrazyKnux, have you tried dragging it back to where you got it from :)

Edit; i just copied what you did & had no trouble deleting the one on the desktop.
Are you the main account on the computer? if not get the main account holder to log in & delete it from their account

When I drag it back, it asked me if I want to merge the folders. I say "Yes" and it says there's a file of the same name in this location, called "desktop.ini". If I press "copy and replace", both files are still there. And I can't drag either of them into the trash, nor can I rename them.

And yeah, I'm on the main account. The "recent items" tab from the start menu opens the one on the desktop now, but I can't do anything with either of them. Not sure how that ended up happening.

So you still have one where it should be & one on the desktop you do not want?

You could try deleting it while in safe mode (to go into safe mode restart your computer & repeatedly tap F8 as it is starting up)

EDIT; If that doesn't work then have a look at this tutorial;

Well, it seems like I've changed the actual location of "Recent Items" cause when I go to the start menu, right click "Recent Items" and press "Open", it opens up the one that's on the desktop, even though the one in appdata/roaming/microsoft/windows still exists, which was the original location.

If you right click the icon "Recent Items" and press send to, you can send it to a zip file, for example. If you open this zip file up you can't move or delete "Recent Items." However, you can delete the actual zip file itself. So it seems that I somehow moved it to the desktop, and since I can't actually delete the desktop, it's stuck. I tried taking ownership of the file, and I've tried deleting it in command prompt and nothing seems to work. I made the file hidden, but that seems like a cheap fix, so I'm still curious as to how to fix it.

Thanks for the help! If anyone else has any ideas as to what to do, let me know! Thanks again!

Did you try deleting the contents of both files before deleting the one on the desktop.

(I think after Reading the section highlighted in yellow in the tutorial is why i had no trouble as i did not have anything in the Recent Items File)

EDIT; You wouldnt have a restore point prior to this you can restore to ??

Yeah, both of the files are cleared.

And another thing, when I drag it back, it asks me if I want to copy and replace "desktop (2).ini" and "desktop.ini". I have no idea what those files are, but regardless of which option I press the result is still the same.

I am running out of ideas & having it hidden is the sort of thing that would bug me to,
If by any chance you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes installed it has a tool called File Assassin you could try out.
Otherwise (my time is limited at moment & have not looked through these) you may pick up something useful in these tutorials

The other option is to try & delete it from the hidden Admin account, this account gives you full permissions much like XP;

Thanks so much for the help, and I'm sorry this problem has been so annoying. It's like everything I try doesn't work. I actually do have Malwarebytes installed, but the File Assassin said "You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the file owner or administrator to obtain permission", and this is after I took ownership of the file too.

I used the hidden admin account, but the Recent Items was properly located for that account, so I couldn't really do anything with it.

Another weird thing I noticed is that if I right click it, it's selected as "read only" and if I uncheck it, and press apply, it goes right back to being "read only" once i right click it again. I dunno, maybe I'll just keep it hidden and hope I forget about it lol.

Edit: Actually, I just started moving the folder everywhere I could. Then I made a couple copies of it that I didn't want, so I pressed ctrl-z a bunch. It asked me if i wanted to delete "desktop.ini" and I did, and now the one on the desktop is gone LOL. The one in the original place is still there, and now I have one in my "Favorites" user folder, but I don't even care about that one. Thanks so much again for your help!
