Extreme lag

Hi,

recently my computer started lagging badly during just about anything I do from playing games to simply surfing the net or playing music in media player. I didnt really wake up and find it laggy, it seemed more of a gradual build up. It also doesnt lag throughout programs, it just take for ever to load things up. For example I can play new games like Mass Effect 2 just fine and I can play music fine its just that it takes something like 2 minutes for it to start playing once i click on the file. It also takes a good 10-20 minutes for windows to start up once I turn on the computer, desktop appears pretty much instantly but if I try to use anything it takes a long time to start up (even more than usualy right after starting the computer).

I know its not limited hard drive space because I have a partitioned 500GB hard drive with 143GB free on one drive and 134GB on the other. I also have an external drive plugged in almost all the time with 138GB free.

I tried turning off some of the application that for some reason start up with windows but I dont know what most of the processes are and if they are required for windows, internet etc. I also turned off all the stupid programs that pop up in the taskbar at startup that I know how, but I dont know how to turn them all off.

I an ASUS laptop with the following specs:
- Vista Ultimate 32bit SP1
- Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 2.8GHz
- Nvidia 9650M GT 2GB
- 4GB RAM
