Not enough hard drive space problem

I am trying to install an update on my XP Pro OS machine. The update is for service pack 3. It starts to install then comes up with an error message saying something like "not enough disk space to load the unistall component of service pack 3. This requires 4 mb of free space on your hard drive. Please create more space and try again".

My hard drive currently has 98% FREE SPACE ! I had countless gigs free, let alone a measly 4 megs. Why do I keep getting that message?
