I have a Compac presario running vista home premium. I have an administrator account and an account for my child. I have forgotten the password for the administrator account. This is preventing me from changing the access to certain web sites for my childs acount.

I can not make a password reset disk since I cant get into the administrator account.

I tried the command prompt solution and was given an access denied reply.

I tried the regedit solution and was given an reply saying unable to adjust number.

Are there any other solutions to try?

Thanks for the help!

Hey,I would shut down the computer then when it boots up press F8 and then select 'Safe Mode with Command Prompt' then let it load the files then log on to any user and type in ;net user administrator /active:yes; that is including the space's and now you can shut down the computer, then log on to the user saying Administrator and make adjustments. To disable that user log on to it then go to start>all programs>accessories then right click Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator And type in 'net user administrator /active:no' And then you're done. Reply if you need any more infomation or I am unclear to you Hope this helps,Josh

If you will look in the tutorial the actual command is ...

net user administrator /active:yes

not how it was written in the post above, have a look at the tutorial that I posted above.

Both the tutorial and shadowjk have the same command line. On my screen it looks as if shadowjk's instructions start with ;. I have tried the command both ways. Using the line from the tutorial is what got me the system 5 error message.

Are you typing "cmd" (without the quotes) into the start menu search box then right click the cmd entry and selecting "run as admin ... " to open the command window then copy / paste the command from the tutorial into the command window and then hit enter?

Even in safe mode I can not log into the administrator account to run the command prompt because it still is looking for the password. I have tried running both commands while logged into a standard user account and get access is denied. I have double checked the spelling and spaces for the command and keep getting the same result.
