PC thinks CD Drive is a Floppy Drive!

Hello all.

I'm hoping that maybe someone can help me with my problem.

A few months ago, my CD/DVD drive started to randomly disappear from my My Computer screen. Usually a restart or two would bring it back, and so I didn't think much of it. About a month ago it disappeared for good, and hasn't come back since. It flat-out refused to open for me, leaving my treasured Sims 2 CD stuck inside. I'm no computer whiz, but I can find my way around the inside of one, and so I took the cover off and pulled the drive out for closer inspection. Everything looked okay, so I got the CD out, and plugged everything back in, put the cover back on, etc. When I booted it up the first time, it came up with an error message and prompted me to press F1 to retry boot or press F2 to head into the BIOS. I tried F1 and it booted up perfectly. It came up telling me it had discovered new hardware, was installing the drivers and so on...except for one problem. It's now telling me I have a Floppy Drive instead of my CD/DVD drive! So, I rebooted again, only this time when into BIOS when prompted. The only things showing up were the Floppy drive, and something called "HDD something or other" (I know, I should have paid closer attention). All the cables are connected properly, and everything's back where it should have been, so...yeah, I have no idea what it's problem is, but maybe someone could help me?

It's a Dell Inspiron 5315 desktop, with Windows Vista Home Premuim, 32bit I believe. The CD/DVD drive is the one that came with it, and it had worked fine up until a couple months ago. Should I look at buying a new one, or is this something that can be fixed?

I think that windows installed the wrong driver for the wrong device.

If you have the model number of your cd rom, you can go do a search on google and reinstall the drivers.

You might also want to delete the drivers for the floppy drive, go into device manager, and look for the floppy disk driver and disable or uninstall it, then reinstall the driver for your CD.

Have you tried right clicking your cd rom drive (from my computer) and clicking eject?
