Hi, I am new here and I am completely stumped. I have been getting an "hp update error code 1720" every time that I try to run an hp update. I went to hp and was told to uninstall hp update in the control panel, so I did, then I went to hp's website and downloaded "hp update and critical security software update download". I ran the program but I did not save it to a device or folder etc. How do I get hp update back into the control panel?? Should I have saved it?? but where do I save it ?? I know this is very simple for some of you guys but, and old guy like me could sure use your fine help.;) Thanks for any and all information. I have an HP Pavilion notebook dv7-1245dx windows vista 64 home premium. Thanks so much. butch

Welcome Butch

If you would be kind enough to post the web address of the download site, I would be better able to help you. I will read the instructions and tell you what to do.

Hello butch, welcome to Vista Forums!

To be honest with you if the error isn't causing any issues in the operation of the PC I wouldn't be concerned with it; a lot of the "HP updates" you're offered are not needed and may cause additional issues as you're seeing.
There may be a way to stop the update notices if you choose to give it a try, there's a file in Windows where manufacturers put stuff they want to start when the PC is started up.
Have a look at the tutorial at the link below to see if you can locate any entry in the file that says anything about "HP Update Service" or something similar, if you do see if Option One will help; do only one change to the file at a time and restart the PC after you make any changes to the file.
Don't be concerned with Option Two in the tutorial for now.
Be sure to post back to keep us informed.

Be sure to have a look at the Note in the tutorial

Thanks so much for the replies, I thought about what you guys said, and I am wondering if I would be just as well to leave the automatic hp update out of my control panel and just manually go to hp's website and do hp updates periodically?

Before I started getting the "error 1720 code" my notebook was constantly doing updates automatically, and many times the updates would not install sucessfully. It really was quite annoying, and I was told by another pc user this morning, that since I had uninstalled the hp update program from the control panel that I could simply go to hp's website and manually pick and install the updates that I wanted, or needed, monthly, or every 6 months or so, as I saw fit to do. Is that "the way to go"? and if so, I am ok and there is nothing to worry about.

Thanks again and please reply. butch

What you suggest sounds like it will not be a problem. Can you direct me to the site so I can be sure of what it is that is needed?

There was 2 different update sites on hp's website to download from. Like an idiot, I didn't create a restore point, or write the address down that I downloaded and updated from last night (3:am). The main hp site that is listed is (Software and Driver Downloads) but the one that I was directed to, and (RAN), but did not (SAVE)...and can't seem to find was (HP Driver Update and Software Security Update Critical).

As I said previously, my system is running fine now with no problems, and unless you have ran into a situation like mine that is similar with someone else who has done the same thing that I have, (and), had problems with (hp update) being uninstalled from the programs in the control panel, then I have no issues with doing manual updates periodically.

My next question is, how would I know which hp updates to manually install? and when would I install them? thanks butch

Great, Butch you have no problem, do not worry about the automatic updates. If your computer is running properly o 2 or 3 times a year go to the site. Anything that applies to you, hit download. The page shows the date. If newer than what you have download it. Write down the dates of the things that you download, so you know what to do in the future.

Actually, if you are running OK, there is no real need to even concern yourself on getting it right away. Few times a year as I said.
