Solved permission error

Altho I am logged in as Administrator on my home computer, Vista won't allow me to move files between folders. Message is that permission is required. I tried turning off User Account Control and it doesn't help. This was an arbitrary change; I didn't change any settings, it just starting doing this recently. Does anyone know what is going on and how to fix it? Is there some other setting I need to check?

Hello,

  • Navigate to the folders that are causing problems and Right Click on them and select Properties. You will have to do them one at a time. Is this over a network?
  • Under the Security tab, click Advanced.
  • Under the Owner tab, click Edit.
  • Click "Other Users and Groups".
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK THREE times.
  • Click Edit (now on the standard file Property window under the Security tab).
  • Click Add.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK.
  • Single click on Everyone and then tick the "Full Control" box under Allow.
  • Click OK TWO times.

EXCELLENT advice niemiro! I would add just one additional tweak when one's user account is "inheriting" permissions from another account (or some source unknown, perhaps a permission template for user accounts in the registry).

1: Right click on the folder/file your trying to edit.
2: Select Properties
3: Click on the Security tab
4: Select 'Advanced'
5: Click on 'Change Permissions'
6: UNcheck 'Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent' box'
7: When prompted to 'Add', 'Remove', or 'Cancel'; select 'Add'
8: Click the 'Apply' button, then 'OK', then 'OK' again.
