Microsoft's stupidity...

I've always been a PC user, but I've always had a few problems with Microsoft's PC platforms. Whenever the error "This file is open in another program..." appears, you are never informed which program it is, if you were you could end the task and solve the problem. Another thing about the errors is when a program stops working. You are once again, not given any information on why it was interrupted or how to fix it. Microsoft's error solving is absolutely ludicrous. They should have addressed those issues in Windows 7 as well, but alas, they fail to comply.

Can you try using task manager to see what is open, when is says this file is being used.

or even download and use process explorer.

I try that all the time, but it usually isn't being used by any of the usual processes, so you have to though the entire list of ALL the processes, in which most average users have no idea which process is which. Also, I don't think closing random processes would be effective...

I have to agree with you. I have experienced the same problem, but apparently to a lesser extent than you. It is a pain.

I have this problem all the time --- getting an error message that the file is open in another location - grrrr!!!! This is the process I go through to locate and close the offending file, but if all else fails, suggetion #3 usually does the trick:

1. Open file. With file open, open Task Manager. Highlight the file in Task Manager and “End Process.” Then go to Windows Explorer and you can delete the file. (If Task Manager doesn't see that file open, go into your Start menu's Recent Items list, select that file, and with that file open, go back into Task Manager. Highlight that file in Task Manager and “End Process.” Then go to Windows Explorer and you should be able to close or delete the file. You may have to repeat this process several times, each time selecting the next most recent item in the Recent Items list.)

2. If it doesn’t work, right-click Computer, select Manage, Shared and from the list select Open Files. Close the open files and try to close or delete the file again.

3. If neither works, go back into Task Manager, select Processes + close explorer.exe. Then restart explorer.exe by going back into Task Manager, and in File section, select New Task (Run). Type explorer.exe (or C:\Windows\explorer.exe) in the Run box (it may be there already). Below the command, it should say: This task will be run with Administrator privileges. Click Okay.

Almost everyone has had these issues, and Microsoft failed year after year to comply with the complaints. Windows 7 didn't do anything about it, neither did Vista or XP. They just won't read any of the error complaints.

Good point, Madandfrustrate[d], but I wonder what the reason is for Microsoft to ignore these problems. It doesn't seem logical that the company would intentionally try to frustrate their users --- maybe we're not being persuasive enough about their needing to find a resolution to the problems, OR, perhaps there's some reason why, technically, they cannot fix them at this time.

You should all take a look at Ubuntu 10.04 Linux. I run it in an Oracle VirtualBox VM under Windows Vista. It works beautifully, has never crashed so far, and when Linux does have issues it tells you about them. Plus my Ubuntu desktop theme (heavily modded) is by far the most beautfiful desktop I've ever seen.
