Re-Installing Vista w/ no CD or Drive.

Hello all,

I am in need of re-installing Windows Vista on my laptop. My optical drive stopped working a while back, and a lot of other bugs started happening as well. I contacted HP, (the manufacturer of the laptop I have) and they gave me all the troubleshooting tips I needed, and tried them all. Finally someone just told me to send it in and they would replace the drive since my warranty was still in effect, and I really don't want to send it in. I really need to re-install Vista on my laptop, but have no drive or no CD. What are my options? I would rather have Windows XP, but don't know how I would get it on here either. Any help is appreciated.

NO, but read my post again; added something new or your manual will tell you.

I've actually already tried system restore, all that. There is no 'advanced' anything on the screen when I press F10. When I try to recover or whatever, it tells me there are no previous backups to use, so I cannot restore. I have never used the restore before, so I know I haven't deleted it on accident.

I've already read the manual over and over making sure I didn't miss anything. All it tells me to do is recover, I can't do that!

I contacted Windows and they pretty much told me they can't do anything, and I'm pretty much screwed unless I can replace the drive.

I was doing some reading around, and some people claim you can install Windows XP from a flash drive, and I have an available flash drive. Is this possible? I would MUCH rather have XP than Vista. It has caused me more problems than anything.
