I bought 2gb or ram for my laptop from BestBuy, which i just noticed is listed as Kinston instead of Kingston. Is this legitimate?

Hello Dick Jagger,
Looks like you bought Kinston ram and not Kingston.
I would remove the ram and check, did you think you were buying Kingston ?.

Welcome

That appears to be an old trick by some manufacturers, not just of ram, but of any commodity. They profit from a known, respected brand by using a name that is very similar.

Anyway, it was some time ago when I bought the ram and installed it, but I was pretty sure it was labeled Kingston on the packaging. I just opened it and confirmed that it does say Kingston.

I just tried to look up the model number at Kingston and this RAM is fake, fake, fake. Stupid BestBuy. I am in Shanghai, where every f*king thing is fake, so I go out of my way to go to BesyBuy and pay way more than anywhere else just so that I was not going to get fake crap. Oh well.

I went back to BestBuy and they said it is not fake. I didn't bring my laptop and couldn't show them that it is listed as Kinston and not Kingston, so I tried to explain it but no luck - also a bit amazing that at a BestBuy store, basically no one can speak any English at all and my Chinese is not good enough. They wouldn't give me a refund.

So I contacted Kingston directly and sent them the photo of the stick with the sn that doesn't match anything on their site, and the screen grab of the erroneous manufacturer name in system properties, and get this, they wrote back that it is genuine!

But I don't believe it is. They didn't say anything about Kinston, the label doesn't match the genuine label information image on their verification page, and there is no identifiable part number.

Well ask them again, specifically about the kinston part this time.

Maybe they are trying to cut costs by not having to print a g on every piece of ram :p
