Hello,
Some members already discussed problem with Windows defender error 0x800106ba. Recommended solution switching to automatic is not working for me. I have Vista Ultimate and Norton Security installed. If I turn off Norton antivirus and Norton firewall nothing changes. The main problem is- I need to change something in Startup programms. But if I access it thru Control Panel- as I click on Change Sturtup programs the WINDOWS Defender Turned Off message window shows up. If I click on the link to turn it on- either computer gets stuck or the message "Error 0x800106ba" shows up. Like I said before- if I follow recommendations to open Services- it shows that it's already set on Automatic.

Try the made for windows antivirus, Microsoft Security Essentials.. It includes the defender function and defender will be turned off, by default.

You only need one anti virus, you are causing a conflict.

I hope that you are able to solve the problem with the advice just given. That being said, use only MSE, not two AntiVirus and you can turn off Defender if you use MSE.

Be careful of registry fixes, too. That site may have a good one, but be careful.
