Major hard drive issues with memory tried it all

I have a 100 gb 2008ish xps M1330 and am the only user of the pc and up until this point i thought vista was ok not much to complain about. like 2 days ago my c drive warned me it was full (97 gb) i performed a disk clean up (rid of 2 gb) tried to make it do a disk defragment it told me my laptop doesn't need it. i read on a wiki page about the shadow storage did all that (rid it of like 8-10 gb) and through this issue learned that vista may have some problems. like the windows permission (or atleast for me,seems like its not my pc sometimes) but i was happy that my laptop wasn't loading slow anymore until today its full again WTF i didn't do anything.. so i performed all the mentioned above methods and maybe i deleted somewhere around 7 gb and i honestly can not find any more gb to delete and even with the seven gb deleted my c dirve still tells me its full (still in the red) and its performance has went so far south (the performance rating is a 4 but i dont how significant that number is)...

so i've been deleting all my non Windows programs which were only i tunes and some small file guitar software. Now im left with 18 different windows programs and some google programs (all which it came with)
i just don't understand is it something i've done or the computer. Was my money wasted on this laptop??

Im stuck and these are the last things i know to do im not sure what all of them do

1. Try the compress my hard drive to save memory button (I dont even know if its safe to do)

2. Try windows 7 (however i still need to delete 10 gb to download it)

3. take a strong magnet to the c drive??? (i just read that online dk the dangers in it so prolly wont do that.. will it void the warrenty?)

4.call dell and complain (dont know what that will do if anything)

5. find out how to delete windows programs (dvd maker, mail, meeting space, etc)
and then maybe try windows 7 (have any of you tried windows 7?)

{on a side note when i try to delete the window programs i do not use it ask for permission i give it cause im the administrater and it accepts it but then it ask again like 4 times and ends up telling me i need permission, from who i ask am i not the highest authority on my pc???}

6. all else fails sale it and get a mac  what else
i appreciate any advice i recieve and thanks ahead of time. I will be glad when i can use my pc for 10 min without problems

Cool cool tom thanks for just saying anything and for real thanks for the system restore that should give me enough space to get windows 7... would you or anyone recommend that?

and everytime i try to defragment it tells me i dont need to and wont so... yea. i wish i could im sure i would regain some space.

I would personally recommend an upgrade to Windows 7, but in the end, it is your decision. If you want to see the differences then this link should be able to help you:

Windows 7: Compare Windows 7 to Windows XP and Windows Vista

If you are looking to move to Windows 7, are you considering an upgrade, or a clean install?

As for the defragmentation problem, I would recommend that you use this program to do the defragmentation:

JkDefrag v3.36

The reason that I recommend this is because firstly it worked nicely for me, and secondly because it has the ability to defragment large files (which the windows defragmenting doesn't).

i'll try the defrag... and watch the link...
i just want to be able to use my laptop with out my hard drive being full... this xps cost like over 2 grand and if it can't keep a low space with out me adding any more than 2 programs and not downloading more than 12 things.. well im disappointed in my money spent is all... i would love to have like anywhere from 15 to 20 gb free out of a 100 ... i keep my files, music and movies on a external hard drive... it seems like it really shouldn't be full.... and if windows7 gave me the free space and it stayed then great but if it dont then i guess i'll just sale it, but im gonna try everything first.
so thanks for the new ideas. ill tell you if they work

those laptops start with a 160gig drive that,ll give you about 148gig after formating so it looks like dell have used 48gig for its hiddern restore partition.
if you do have a full vista install disk (not a restore disk) you could reclaim the reserved space with a partition tool or you could even install a bigger drive. if you have divx installed check its temp folder for old and partly downloaded movies to delete, same with java. if you have ccleaner installed select "wipe free space" and that will release more storage space as well, use vistas disk cleanup to compress and remove old files.
vista will also reserve up to 15% system restore space, reducing that to 5% for eg will give you room to play with.

Also, when you have finished with the MBAM scan, can you upload it for us?

Can you do the same with HiJackThis:

http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/hijackthis/HijackThis.exe

Run it and upload the log for us. This is also portable so you won't need to install it.

Another idea of mine is this:

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/portableapps/WinDirStat%20Portable/WinDirStat%20Portable%201.1.2.80/WinDirStatPortable_1.1.2.80.paf.exe?use_mirror=garr

This will show you how your hard drive is being used up, it will show the largest folders in size order so you will be able to see what is taking up the most space. It is portable, so you don't need to install it.

some issues i am having today are:
-when i try anything in the command prompt it now says i don't have correct permission to run command(commands being: to show shadowstorage and resizing the storage) after the first time i cleared the shadow storage i tried to do it again the next day and it said the same thing as today (i don't have correct permission) i disregarded it then but now i would like to resize the shadow storage.
-they seem to be more folders in my main folders..
ie... in C:drive there is $Recycle.Bin, Boot, program data(right under program files, this one may have been there before and i just missed it)

in my main folder there is "Nethood" & "Printhood" & "nt.user.dat" (5 diff. ones)and lastly a new my documents folder all which access is denied..

i used the WinDirStat program Tom and wow just wow...
i found the problem and fixed it like that... the problem was i had like 20 vid's of things i made up on the guitar and these vids were taking up 70 GB's.. i couldn't believe the amount of space a 1 or 2 min video took up with the webcam video recorder.. Learned my lesson :D

No problem :) I'm glad that I was able to help you

WinDirStat is a very useful tool because over time, I seem to lose files somewhere in the hundreds of directories on my hard drive and this can find them again.

Are you still having a problem with permissions and command prompt?
