I'm new to the forum, so I'm not sure where to direct this query. Sorry if this is the wrong spot.
I am having no success running a defrag. When I activate the Disk Deframenter from the Start menu, I get this message: "Analyzing disks. This may take a few moments..." followed almost immediately by: "Your file system performance can be improved. It is recommended that you defragment now." When I select "Deframent Now", and select the drive I want to defragment, I get a "Defragmenting hard disk. This may take a few moments..." This message stays on the screen for about a second, followed by "Analyzing disks. This may take a few moments..." NO DEFRAGMENTATION OCCURS. Then it goes back to "Your file system performance can be improved. It is recommended that you defragment now." I've tried this over and over and over, and obviously, gotten the same results every time. The hints from Windows Help direct me to run the Chkdsk utility, and I followed the steps, going to the Start menu, opening "My Computer", clicking on "Properties", then "Tools", selecting "Check Now" from the Error-Checking option. Then, when I get the choices of "Automatically Fix File-System Errors" and "Scan For and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors", I select both and click "Start" I then get a message that says "Windows Can't Check The Disk While It Is In Use... Do you want to check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer?" I click "Schedule Disk Check" and nothing happens. No list of options for when to start a scan, no calendar to schedule a scan later in the day, nothing. Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed from there? It almost seems as if there is something on the hard disk that is preventing me from defragmenting, repairing, or even scanning to see if something is wrong!
