Default printer won't stick

I know that this question has been posted many times but I couldn't find anything in those posts that helped in my situation, so I am posting my own.

Until about a year ago, my default printer was Microsoft Office Document Image Writer, because I usually print to files I can save instead of printing on paper. But a year ago, I started having trouble with the MODIW. It would only save in .tif format instead of .mdi, as it had been. And it only worked about half the time. The worst part was having trouble opening old .mdi files I had saved. I even reinstalled it from the original CD but it didn't fix the problems.

After that, I set the default to my Canon printer and started using a pdf writer for files I wanted to save. But every time my computer was brought out of sleep, hibernation, or restarted, the default printer reverted back to MODIW. It has been like this for a year.

I went through other similar posts and learned about changing it in the registry. I went to "Article ID: 156212 Changing a User's Default Printer in the Registry," but when I got to HKEY_ CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows,I saw that the Device was set to Canon iP4700 series,Canon iP4700 series,USB001, even though it is still defaulting to the MODIW. So I don't know what else to try.

If anyone has figured out how to fix this problem, please let me know, and thanks for your help.

Lets try this, uninstall the non default. Use the default for a while then reinstall the non default. Make a system restore point first in case there is a problem installing again.
