cloning vs true image

patch41

Vista Pro
Hi folks, this is a general question about cloneing,I have a external drive, 500-gb, which i backup my system on a regular basis, with macrium true image,If i was to partition say, 150-gb, on the external drive and clone my system, would i then have two independant systems, that for some reason one got corrupted or crashed i could just reboot to the other one, Thanks.

Cloning is making an image of your entire system so the copy will work just like the
original.
also you cannot partition the external hard drive because the app will read the drive as a whole and delete any data and partitions you have in the external hdd in order to continue.

When you're done making the image you can swap HDDs and boot from the copy.

The external drive will not run XP correctly....at least not without a sledgehammer and quite a few hours of wrestling with it.

The only disadvantage of using and external HDD is:
if it's powered by USB then the speed is slow compared to an internal HDD.
(depends on HDD speed)

if it's AC powered then, power can fail and the speed will be a bit better.
(depends on HDD speed)

You have to go into bios to set it to boot from usb first and HDD second or third.

and making too many copy's of windows will result in windows calling home to
check for activation key, which can be bad some times.
