Vista Startup Repair

So i was playing a video game and the computer just froze, I could move the mouse around but that was it. I restarted the computer and it would load to a point and then just go to a black screen.

I then choose the option to use "startup repair" and it has been going on for 3 hours with no feedback. Any idea what i should do? Thanks

Hello Qetuoadg, welcome to Vista Forums!

If you haven't found a solution, have a look at the tutorials at the links below to see if you can do a system restore to a point before the issue started, I include the one for safe mode if you need to do the restore from there.

Update- i cannot run safe mode as it stalls out before it runs.

I tried to system restore and it said "this request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". Any idea what that means?

I will try and run tests on RAM and HD as theog sugguested. Thanks for the help....I am very new to this.

Hello .

Too bad the system restore didn't work, starting to look like a hardware issue as theog suggested.

As well as what has already been posted,
Post your system specs.
If using a laptop can you do a harddrive check from within the BIOS..
If using a desktop turn off the quick ram check option from within your bios.
Try to get into device manager to see if there are any problems.
Is there any clicking sounds coming from your harddrive or a large amount of harddrive activity.
If using a desktop strip the system down to the minimal conponents or get a friend to help if needed to try and diagnose what is wrong. As has been suggested it may be a hardware fault however, as I have experianced just one system file getting corrupt can stall a system.
Good luck and post your results

Update:
My computer is a dell inspiron 1720, around 3 years old. Running vista home 32 bit. Dunno what other spec needed.

So i ran the memory test and left for a movie.. when i came back it was on the welcome screen and i signed on. So far (its only been about 5 min) everything is working. I am running a virus scan but for some reason i dont think that was the problem. Could the memory test fixed something or did it just start working. Seems weird as the startup repair wasnt working that the memory test would fix something.

Thanks for the help, people here were great. Hopfully i dont have to post again soon!

Hi guys.

This is my first reply on here though I registered last year when I had my laptop. I did a search for Startup Repair and this thread is close.

I have a Fujitsu-Siemens AMILO Li1818 laptop which comes with Vista Home Premium (SP2). I've noticed a Boot folder on the drive a long time ago with memtest.exe in it. I know to use this you have to use Administrative Tools and Memory Diagnostics Tool. I did a restart and let it run. After it had finished and everything was ok it restarted.

Then we get the message Startup Repair (recommened) or normal Windows startup. I thought I would try a Startup Repair just to see what happens. It started up ok and everything appears to work as it should.

I was wondering why it needs to do a Startup Repair after the DOS memory test when its nothing to do with Windows?

Cheers. ;)
