Vista will only load in Safe Mode...

I've seen that there's a million similar problems out there, but I can't get any of those fixes to work.

Back in Feb I installed a new HP printer on my HP Pavilion desktop. About a month later windows automatically updated. A few weeks after that Windows randomly shut down and would only restart in Safe mode.

I was away on business for a month or so, but my wife could not get the computer to start normally. She turned the computer off and it set dormant for a few weeks.

When I got home I turned on the computer and everything booted up normally. I took that chance to back up all my important files on an external hard drive, but then about 3 hours into operating normally it shut down and would only boot in safe mode. I tried several fixes to no avail and then just gave up.

A few weeks later I tried again and sure enough the computer booted normally, let me run Vista for a few hours, then locked up, shut down, and refused to boot in anything but Safe Mode.

I tried system restores, but at the end of the process I get some error about not being able to complete the restore. I've run start-up repair about a half dozen times with no luck. I've tried going into msconfig in safe mode, but there are no check boxes when the window opens.

What the heck is going on with my computer??? Can anyone offer any help? The computer did not come with a recovery CD or the original Vista CD.

Hello Hokie, welcome to Vista Forums!

Let's try the easiest first; have a look at and run the command listed in the tutorial at the link below, if it comes up with errors run it several times until it finishes error free; be sure to post back with the outcome; if that doesn't sort it we'll start discussing the removal of that HP printer driver as a test.

I ran the scan and it said there were no issues. I did get a pop-up that said my graphics card is not working correctly so I guess I'm going to go ahead and update that as well while I'm at it...

Well, I just updated my driver and let windows install a couple updates and for the time being she's working normally... I've had this happen before only to go back in to safemode shortly thereafter.

I'll keep you up to date.

When it happens, check event viewer (type same words in search) and look for errors in adminstrative tab. If problem is prolonged try to work it with clean boot, we can diagnose and correct then.

I'm having trouble with that. When I go into msconfig, I cant see the check boxes... they don't show up. I just attempted what I thought was a clean boot, but with no luck... I'm back in safe mode... This is almost enough to make me switch to a mac... if I wasn't against everything they stand for... ha

Any other tips? How can I know what I'm performing a clean boot?

My first post shows how to clean boot

I understand that... the problem is that in safe mode I am unable to see the check boxes. I do not know what is checked and when is not. When instructions say, "Make sure option "X" is unchecked," I am not able to do this. I cannot see the check box and whether or not it is checked and therefore am not able to follow the instructions.

Can you type msconfig in search and then diagnostic startup, in msconfig? I do not think that you will be able to, but let me know.
