Vista stuck on loading screen...

Hi, I just got back from a vacation to find my HP dv6000 not working exactly like I left it, so I thought I'd ask for help here.

Any info I think might help: Vista Home Premium 32bit; HP DV6000 Laptop; 12-cell battery, from original manufacturer (HP).

The problem: Last night when I started up my laptop it worked basically as I had left it, however when I plugged it into AC power it said "plugged in, not charging". I restarted and checked again, this time it said the usual "plugged in, charging", however it wasn't charging even after leaving it on AC power for about an hour. I accidentally kicked out the cord, and the computer turned off immediately.

I decided to call it a night and the next morning when I went to turn on my laptop, it only got to the loading screen (http://www.azumass.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/vista_boot_screen_1.gif) and would not go any further. I left the loading screen up for a good 20 minutes before it became clear it wasn't going to work (it usually only takes up to 1 minute-2 minutes to load). I forced the computer to turn off via the power button and started it up again. This time I launched startup repair but it did the same thing as before.

Does anybody have any idea how to fix this?

Edit: I don't know if it's worth mentioning but since the battery was acting up as well, I've just ordered a replacement and when it arrives I'm going to use that while I try to repair my computer.

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the welcome and for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I'm unable to follow those steps because I don't have any CDs that came with the computer (it was given as a gift from family about 4 years ago, so anything like that would probably be long-gone).

Do you have any friends or family who have a vista installation disc?

Next time that it happens, go to event viewer and look for critical errors that happened at the time of the problem

Have you tried booting the computer into safe mode?
Try it. It may be a driver for hardware.
If it does start look in event viewer to see if you can find
any start up errors.
This laptop you are talking about do you plug it in alot or
do you wait for the battery to run down.
In my opion I think it is the battery giving you trouble.

Another question.
Are you using a power strip to plug it in?
I ask because pluging directly into the wall
is bad for the computer and battery.
Could screw up the mabo and battery.
You can get to event vier by right clicking computer in start meneu
or by giong to admin tools in control panel.
If you do not know what you are looking for do not
bother. It was just a suggestion.
Did you get it started in safe mode?

Jimmy
