Solved Restore Points disappearing /Amount of Shadow Storage

Hi Forum,
As a "newbie" I put a problem to you that is occuring on my Laptop HP HDX 18 running Vista Home Premium x64 which is frustrating. Restore points vanish after after a day or two even though I have taken no action to cause this . I have gone into vssadmin and increased the maximum storage to 40GB, heretofore it had been set at 900MB. All my Discs have ample space on them so I certainly cannot be losing these points for lack of space. But is raising max storage to 40GB "overkill"...I see in the examples quoted in articles a figure of only 3GB is set. I am not very technical and I rarely mess with settings/registry etc and have very little
added software on the PC. Only thing cCleaner and Defraggler.(used rarely). Could a problem be with these ? Help:sleepy:

Welcome

I can only guess, based upon the information that you gave me, but if there is enough room and you do not degfrag the drive that the restore points are on, I would make a guess that you have some maintenance (maybe from your AntiVirus) defragging the restore drive or some other way deleting them

Thanks, Rich and Shawn,
No, I do not Dual Boot..System has only Vista on it but your reply,Richard, may be the answer. I use AVG free but there does not appear to be a defragging element in it. The story continues ............. I feel using an external hard drive and doing a complete Back up and Restore might be preferable to using System Restore ...huh ?

Go to search, by the start button, type task scheduler, then look for defrag among the listed schedules.

AVG free would not be the problem. The paid antivirus have extra features to maintain your computer etc. These things do more harm than good.

You do not want to lose the system restore feature. If you have a little problem with your operating system, with system restore you can just fix the system and not affect your personal documents. With a complete back up, your documents etc will be affected. You could lose that once in a lifetime picture. You really should have both System Restore and the back up.

I will try to help solve this, I know it is some small issue. Lets start with the task scheduler; look for a defrag on the schedule.

I, also found this article on the topic. It is similar to my thought that another program was causing the issue. I suggest that you read it. Then go to msconfig (from start menu) and give me a screen shot of programs that start up at boot. They are listed under the startup tab.

I may not be able to resolve the problem, but rest assured, I will try my best.

Many thanks, Richard, you have been a great help. I shall try these methods when I return home in a few days time..I have to away at the moment. Will also send you a screen shot of the Start Menu though I feel I may have disabled most under a Selective Start up mode.

I have seen these things before and the solution is usually something very simple, the trick is to find it. Report back when you have the time. Enjoy your trip.

Hi Richard, and Brink, I am having the same problem,I put a system restore point in myself every so often, only to find my previous restore points have disappeared,I did not know that defragging would do that,i checked in the task scheduler and did not see any defragging listed, but i did get this popup box stating that a file is corrupt, see attachment, also i did change from avast to norton as it came free with comcast, and i think it does automatic defragging, could that be the culprit,i also ran sfc/scannow and that came up clean, any suggestions, thanks

This is a common problem with that RSS feed synchronization task. Here is the fix.
Open the Task Scheduler.
On the View Menu, select the 'Show Hidden Tasks' option.
In the left side menu, select 'Task Scheduler Library'.
In the Center section, right click the 'User_Feed_Synchronization' task and select Delete.
Exit the Task Scheduler.
Next, select Start / Accessories. Right click 'Command Prompt' and select the 'Run As Administrator' option.
Click 'Continue' on the UAC prompt.
In the command window, type the following command.
msfeedssync enable
Press ENTER.
This command will replace and refresh the 'User_Feed_Synchronization' task.
This will not affect the RSS Feeds you are subscribed to.

Hope This Helps,
Josh

Dear Richard,
I located problem (I think). Defrag was scheduled daily in the Task Scheduler. I disabled it . It is early days yet but the Points seem to be staying. Many thanks for all your help and thanks to "Josh" also.

My Computer

Thanks to this great forum I have seen the problem before, and, as in your case, it was defrag.

And thank you for letting us help you. Tell your friends about us, too.

My Computer

Hi Rich,I wanted to wait five days to make sure my system restore was working properly, you said to check into defragging to see if that could be the problem, or a third party app,so i installed my own restore points, and went through each one and checking my restore points every 20-minutes or so to make sure they hadn't disappeared, cc-cleaner,auslogics disc defragger, windows, then i tried my program perfect disc, the defragging worked good, then it started smart placement on perfect disc, and as i was ckecking my system restore sure enough every time i checked one of my restore points had disappeard then when the program finished all my restore points had gone, so i got rid of perfect disc but you tought me a lesson by suggesting defragging could be the culprit,i was under the impression that you should defragg as often as possible, thank you rich, again you came through for me and i tipped the scales, patch41
