Hello,
FOR THE TECHS AND STEVE: It sounds like what you have done is by pressing the buttons, you have managed to access Safe Mode, which then had an account that required a password. If we can get you into Safe Mode, after removing the password, we may be able to fix your computer, although, I will tell you now that it will not be easy, it may be very difficult indeed.
There is also one more explanation for the above password. Quote from the Acer eRecovery:
Hidden partition main page
Press <Alt> + <F10> during POST to boot the system from the hidden hard disk drive
partition and access the hidden partition main page.
Note: You must enter the password to access the hidden partition main page.
The hidden partition main page offers three options to restore the system: restore to factory default settings, restore from user's backup, or restore from backup CD/DVD.
Restore system to factory default settings
To restore system to factory default settings:
1. Select this option, then enter the password. The utility restores the system from the factory default settings image in the hidden hard disk drive partition.
2. When prompted, confirm system recovery. A message appears to tell you that you will lose all data on the drive. The utility then restores the system to its original state.
There is actually a way around this, see quote (don't worry Steve, we will provide far better explanations when the time is right!) This can obviously be done many ways:
-Download Hiren's Boot CD 9.8
-Boot to it and boot into MiniXP
-After it loads, open Notepad and minimize it. You'll need it later.
-Open the Hiren's Boot Menu app and scroll to the "Recovery" menu, then select Partition Find and Mount.
-Select your physical HD and do a Normal Scan of the drive.
-Once you find the hidden partition (approx. 5Gigs), mount it as any unused drive letter.
-The AIMDRS.DAT file will be on the root of the drive. Now drag that file to Notepad that you opened earlier. Here's what it should look like:
[MyData]
PD=xxxxxx
HT=<password hint>
FOR STEVE: Therefore, (if you don't understand the above, just ignore it, it is for the other techs primarily) if you don't mind losing all of your data, and you don't mind reinstalling programs (remember that all documents, saved games, work etc. may be permanently gone, so don't take this lightly) then there is a much easier solution. (It is actually Theog's post, but see below)
Switch your computer off, switch it back on again, and immediately press and hold the Alt key, and then start repeatedly tapping the F10 key. If you get asked for a password, try and ask for the password hint. If you managed the guess the password from this, tell us, and either continue, or if you get stuck, come back here, and we will simplify things.
If you cannot guess the password, switch the computer off again, start it up again, and immediately start tapping the F8 key. Select Safe Mode with the arrow keys, and press enter when a list appears (once the list has appeared of Advanced Startup Options, you can stop tapping F8) Allow this to boot (it will look quite odd) and if it works (ie if you see an albeit odd Desktop in mainly black and white) tell us. If your computer freezes, please tell us the last file name (the file name at the bottom of the screen) to be shown, and we will go from there. Be aware that some files take a long time, so leave it at least 10 minutes before thinking about a freeze.
Good luck!
Richard
