Looks like an HD failure

My wife's 2002 era Dell has been on shaky ground for awhile. Last night, all of a suddene, she gets what appears to be a test pattern on the monitor- white screen with broken diagonal lines left to right. Shut down processor, restarts, no sounds of HD spinning up. Toast?

If you suspect so then follow this thread and run a complete Diagnostic HD Diagnostic
But if Hard drive is toasted you would still see upto the BIOS screen. Then it might say Hard drive not found etc. I suspect it might be the display or Mobo. Disconnect the Hard drive from Motherboard and see if happen the same. Remove the RAM and see if you hear a memory beep sound. If you have a different display card try with that and see if you can see any difference.

^Yes it is, 90% of linux distros can be booted right to a working os, that loads into the ram, from the install disk.
Ubuntu can and is the best option as it knows nearly all hardware.

If it runs, then your forsure a HD fauilure.

Check your HD.
1) Boot DVD, & Press Shift+F10 (for command prompt)
2) Boot DVD, & Command Prompt at Startup - Windows 7 Forums (for command prompt)
Open an command prompt.
In the command prompt, type chkdsk C: f/x/r/v and press Enter.
