Layout changes for a folder affecting other folders

If I change the layout for a folder so that the navigation pane is showing, inevitably other folder's layouts adopt that change. Likewise if I change the layout for a folder to not show the navigation pane for a folder, other folder's layouts change lkewise.

What is it about Vista that it can not remember the layout for each folder and use that layout for that folder only, no matter what the layout is for other folders ?

Hello Eldiener,

Unlike folder view settings (ex: List, Details, Tiles, Small/large/ icons, etc..), the Navigation Panepane settings are universal for all Windows Explorer folder templates. It can only be turned on or off in all windows. :(

Sorry,
Shawn

Thanks for your answer. It is really poor that the navifation settings are tied to folder templates rather than particular folders.

However if I change the layout for a particular folder, I sometimes do and sometimes do not see other folders which use the same type of folder template duplicate that layout change. So I really do not understand how this works.

As an example I changed the layout for a folder on my desktop so that the navigation pane is showing. The folders type is "All Items". But if I open another folder whose type is "All Items" I do not see the navigation pane.

In other circumstances I will change the layout so that the navigation pane is not showing. Then when I open a folder of the same type, which previously was showing the navigation pane the last time I viewed its item, I will sometimes see it so that the navigation pane is no longer showing even though I never changed it directly.

So I am still baffled as to what is actually happening.

Eldiener,

That is strange since the navigation pane is universal in "all" folder templates to be on or off. Now, it will still be on for the small File -> "Open", "Save As", etc.... type dialog box windows.
