difficulty moving files - external drives

Vista 64 with 100gb free disc space.
2 seagate drives.
moving files from the 500gb to the tetra is a problem.
11450 days to move a tiny file!
when i cancel i get a cancelling box that is there forever.
do i need to format the new drive to NTFS?
some files are larger than 4gb - which i read is a limit.
how do i tell how it is formatted?
