hey all, any help urgently appreciated thanks: running Vista 64, Q9650 @3.33Ghz, 8Gb Ram, OS on 1 HD, Data on 2xHD in Raid 1. Windows update installed updates to the 2 x Radeon HD4780 cards yesterday and update didn't install properly. Machine crashed. Uninstalled/reinstalled 4 Radeon times. Worked, then crashed again. Now machine won't boot from HD or Windows CR Rom. Hangs at crcdisk. All internal connections fine. ANY IDEAS please? I need to work! thanks.

Try going in with safe mode. See if you can get to system restore, if you can use system restore. First thing to do after you are working, set automatic update to notify and not install automatically.

thanks - can I create that recovery disk on a mac? And then use it in my windows machine. I also don't quite understand the instructions around step 17-19. I have the OEM windows vista disk. Do I create another separate recovery disk and switch between the two?

You have an actual DVD, that installs Vista?

yes I do. I can get the machine to start to boot from it, but then it hangs with the "microsoft windows" dots. I left it running like this all night and it wouldn't finish booting.

This is important, so I know what to send you.
Did you buy Vista and install it yourself or

Did Vista come preinstalled on the computer? The DVD that you mentiond came with the computer purchase.

Vista was installed on the computer when new, and I have the OEM disk. It's a normal genuine Windows disk, etc. It's a purpose-built computer by an independent specialist but I can't get hold of them today.

Richard, thanks, but I tried that (explained in my first summary). My PC has 3 hard drives, one for the OS and 2 in Raid 1 for the data. I have set the BIOS to boot from the DVD drive, but it still hangs when booting from the Windows DVD.

OK then back to your first question. Yes, you have to put in your install DVD at 17. The files that are needed are extracted. Most people prefer the download method as shown in option one. If it were me, I would download the files as shown in option 1.

I do not think that using a Mac will cause a problem.
