Solved How do I create a Newegg desktop icon and link?

Hi,

I used to have a functional Newegg desktop icon.

Unfortunately, now there is no connection behind it. In other words, all I have now is a dead link icon-just the icon.

How do I reestablish the link to Newegg with my desktop icon in all its former glory?

Thanks.

Go to the web page you want the icon to access (the exact page) and right click on the page and then click create shortcut. If the site requires a logon, then I suggest you choose that page rather than a page that requires you to have already logged on to make sure you have no access problems (though it will most likely send you to the login page anyway - in some cases it may give you an access denied message so take the safer and surer approach. Test it to make sure it works and change the icon to whatever you prefer. If the old link has an icon you like, you should be able to identify and copy it from that shortcut to the new shortcut.

Here's another way to add a fully functional Internet Explorer Icon to the Desktop in Vista - but it is much more complicated (though if you ever want an IE Icon rather than a website shortcut, this is the way to go (including automatic registry edits): Add Internet Explorer Icon to Windows XP / Vista Desktop - How-To Geek). It will also need to be configured after it is added it you want a different icon picture or you want IE to start somewhere other than the default location listed in Tools / Internet Options / General (whatever you input in the icon will override that general default as occurs with the shortcut you created above). It offers options not available to the regular shortcut icon that may come in handy - but it is more than you requested in your post (and not required to do what you wanted - but it may come in handy at some point and if you don't have one on your desktop it may be wise to add at least one to give you the additional options). Here's another article on how to do this with automated assistance for the registry edits as well: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/68093-internet-explorer-icon.html.

You can then delete the old link that for whatever reason no longer works.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

OK, thanks for all the help. I am finding that some of the things suggested and that I tried, work for me. But I am having trouble understanding how to superimpose my old Newegg icon onto the new Newegg desktop shortcut.

I now have a functional Newegg desktop connection shortcut. But I like the old logo. I want to make the connection of the old logo to the new functional shortcut.

How can I do this? Thanks.

Go to the old shortcut, right click on it and select Properties. In properties, you will find an icon button. Click it to change the icon. It will present you with the icon (perhaps other icons as well) and a link to where that icon is located. Copy the full path name of the link. Now go to the new shortcut and right click on it and select Properties and click on the Icon button. Delete whatever is in the icon location path and paste the location you copied from the old shortcut there. Click OK. Now open Icon again and it should show the icon you want. Select it by clicking on it and click OK. The new shortcut should now have the old shortcut icon. That should do the trick.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Thanks, Lorien, that worked! This problem is solved! By the way, I never tried the registry method. I wonder if it would have worked? I may fiddle with it someday.

How do I close this thread?

Upper right of the frame, three icons, one looks like a triangle. Click on it and type solved. Good luck
