Help: Viewing videos causes screen to shake

I hope someone can help me. I have a Lenovo Y530 Ideapad laptop running Vista. When I'm on YouTube or any other web site viewing videos and I pause the video or when the video ends, my monitor goes haywire -- the screen image starts shaking and zig-zagging. If I re-boot, the problem is temporarily resolved, but with the images so distorted and zig-zagging, it's virtually impossible to click on the correct icon. Simply turning off the power doesn't help. When I turn the power back on, the monitor is still acting up.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Check event viewer for errors

Go to device manager
Look for yellow warning signs of problems

Update driver, especailly graphics and sound



How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).

Hi Rich,

I checked event viewer for problems and everything is fine. I also checked device drivers for updates and apparently I have the latest updates installed.

I suspected that installing YouTube Downloader may have triggered a virus, but I removed the downloader program and the problem persists. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Download and scan with malwarebytes. Run the full scan and update before using it.

I suggest you also check the drivers for the monitor as well as the graphics card (in case you didn't already do that).

Are you saying the screen works fine when viewing a video but is all messed up the rest of the time (when you boot, when you pause or finish the video, if you never even use a video but just run other programs)? I'm not entirely clear on when the problem occurs - it seems like it occurs all the time UNLESS you are playing a video - but I may have misunderstood you. Could you please clarify?

Do you know when this problem began? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates - but do them one at a time as one of them could have caused the problem. Use the recovery disk if the system prompt doesn’t work. The recovery disk works a bit different from the above procedures but if you follow the prompts from the System Restore menu option with the above information you should be able to restore with no problems.
