I'm sure this as been asked before, and I'm just not finding it.

My motherboard died and the replacement will be in next week. When I get the new one in, I'm sure my Vista installation will trip and say that it's not valid. What should I expect beyond that? And/or what should I do?

A new mb is considered a new computer by MS, so yes there will be an activiaton obstacle, but not a problem

Activate by phone
Activate Windows 7 by Phone - Windows 7 Forums (same as Vista)

While installing do not give your key when asked, do not check install automatically when I am online

Get your Computer running the way you want it. Install programs etc and then back up on an external hard drive

Call the activation center. If there is a problem a rep will come on, tell him the problem and then he will activate you

Now replace the back up, (that was not needed, hopefully) and make a new back up.
You never have to activate again.

You want to be sure that you are happy before you activate, so you do not have to call again

Edit: you have 30 days to activate (can be extended, but that is not necessary)

Good luck

Thank you for your gracious rep. Just a bit of more encouragement. Many have come on with the same problem. Not one (as far as I know) has been turned down by Microsoft. I am told that the reps are polite and professional and do everything possible to make you satisfied. They do not want to lose customers.

Take care my friend.

However, IF its the same model, usually Vista won't even notice.
