importing old users from old vista drive

my laptop died but drive remains intact.

connected old drive in external case to USB on new laptop. new vista can see the old users folder but will not allow me access even with trying to adopt permissions etc.

when it tries to access the old hard drive goes nuts.

is there any way I can get the info off this old hard drive?

I do not know how to answer your question, but I wonder, why you have used two acceptable methods to access those files and neither works.

Do you have the entire OS available on the external?

the external has vista on it but when i try to boot from external it goes to a vista repair screen and then the coloured bar just moves across the screen ad infinitum

thank you for that but I did not get anywhere.

However, I have used icacls and I can now get to the \users\oldaccount folder and I can see every folder underneath which is where all the pics and documents are that I need.

However, I cannot open any of the folders as I still received access denied.

I need help with icacls as I cannot find a global command that works on all the folders.

Any ideas on this would be much appreciated.
