Many people are afraid to format and reinstall their windows as it require too much work or you are afraid of losing your data or programs.
Through experience here is some tips to overcome issues and have your system back and running quicker
If you can still boot up the windows, download and install Belarc advisor

this program will create the whole profile of your computer with all your programs details/ serial numbers for any programs such as office/ adobe/ etc and drivers details
Then download and run Driver genuis.
Driver Genius Professional Edition - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com
Make sure you select "self installer" while doing the backup of your driver.
You can remove and connect your hard drive externally to do a manual backup of all your data or you can use "acronis" to image the hard drive.. Acronis is a paid software You do have the trial version but not much can be done with the trial one.
If you have a corrupted hard drive, use RECUVA. to retrieve all your data.

Once you are sure you have everything then you can format and reinstall your windows using a windows cd.
Once done, install the drivers, from the backup you did using driver genuis.
transfer back all your data. Install any software needed, remember you have all the serial numbers from Belarc advisor.
