Problem With A Service

I am having issues with a program from the security company DSC called DLS IV Updater. What follow is what I have posted at an alarm forum for help, but will try to see if someone with more vista knowledge can help. Here is the problem.

I recently installed the DLS IV updater. When I click on check for updates I get the message....Unable to contact update service, ensure that the service is running.

I have tried to manually start the service (DSC Update Service) in computer management and get the following message:

The DSC Update Service service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.

When I check Event Viewer/Window Logs/Applications, here is the error message:

Service cannot be started. System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at DLSUpdateServiceHost.DLSUpdateService.OnStart(String[] args)
at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.ServiceQueuedMainCallback(Object state)

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the updater as well as all of the prerequisites. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks
Drew

Confirm that the following are installed on your system:

1) Microsoft(r) .NET Framework v3.5 SP1
2) Microsoft(r) SQL Express 2005 SP3
3) Microsoft(r) Visual C++ 2008 Runtime (x86)

If any are missing, download them and install them manually. Then try the updater again (perhaps even installing it again if necessary). Yes, it says that the program will automatically install these programs but that might not be working correctly so if it isn't doing it, do it manually.

From what I read in the other forum, there may be compatibility issues with this software and Vista 64-bit but they didn't explain that very well or offer any solutions or ways to determine if that was the issue (at least that's what someone told you). If that's the problem, I don't know how to help as it is their software and if THEY think there's a compatibility issue and didn't offer a solution, then I'm not sure how we can help.

If you found the Service, then set it on Automatic (not Manual) and start it and see if that helps. I suspect it won't start or won't allow changes or still won't work and will give you the same or a different error message, but it's worth a try.

Your best chances are in that other forum despite the fact that they don't seem to be very helpful thus far - but maybe they'll provide more details or instructions or guidance if you continue to reply and request their help. From what I read, although you were the last to post, I think you need to post again and specifically request instructions on how to get the updater properly installed and operating on your system. And if you can successfully install the above-listed pre-requisites before posting, then you can add that you have done and confirmed that which will remove one excuse they may try to use.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Looks like a bug in the code to me, and not something wrong with either yourself or your computer. I can already tell that it maybe not is coded as well as it could be, because that is a security vulnerability. By showing me the entire exception contents, it is providing a hacker with vital clues about variable names, protection, and code structure. This is a big no-no. They should not be showing me this revealing code material for all to see.

P.S: This particular exception looks very much like a code bug, and quite an easy-to-do one at that.

Thanks for the replies. I have been working with someone with experience with the program over on diyalarmforum. They have confirmed that the program has issues with 64 bit OS. They have been unable to get it to work on Windows 7 64 bit. The same download works fine for them on 32 bit XP machines. I am currently loading it onto a 32 bit XP machine I had sitting around. I will let you know the outcome.

Thanks,
Drew
