Some help please

Blue Mac

I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit on an Advent laptop, I am only a basic user of the laptop, the problem I have is that when I switch the laptop on it will get to the home page then freeze, I switch it off by the power button the reload it in safe mode which loads fine, reading the help there it states to load up the start up folder and go through each item to find which item is causing the problem, just, where is this start up folder, on the programmes list there is a folder that says Start Up but this is empty is there another folder, I have Kaspersky 2010 I.S. loaded plus CCleaner, any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

They're suggesting a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem. Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

I hope this helps. If not, we'll take a look at the problem and see if we can find other options to identify and resolve the cause of this problem.

Good luck!

Perhaps a short cut to Lorien's solution. While trying clean boot, if your computer does work properly be sure tht resetting your anti virus is a priority. I have a feeling your Anti Virus may be the cause of the problem. In a large percentage of similar cases that is the outcome.

Thank you Lorien, have run through what you recommended, I found no problems in the services but the problem re-occured when I was going through the start up folder, I think it is possibly as richc 46 said and be my anti-virus though at no time was I able to disable this, whenever I disabled it then clicked apply it enabled itself, Thanks richc46, can you please explain what you mean by resetting my anti-virus.

My Computer

I meant to disable.

A better solution
Make a system restore point
Unistall the antivirus
In its place use Microsoft Security Essentials
and the Windows Firewall
and Malwarebytes.
Most feel this is the best combination for protection anyway.
If the problem continues or you do not like it, go back with the system restore.

Thanks again richc46, I will try this, just a little thing, how do I make a system restore point? also, is there any particular order i should install MSW and Mal, is this before or after I uninstall my anti-virus, I already have windows defender.

My Computer

I am saying system restore does not delete or put that stuff back.

To create a Restore Point go to Start> Right click computer and click on Properties then in the Left hand Pane select System Protection and then click on the System Restore Tab and name the System Restore and Create it

It may not respond for a While this is Normal

And Depending on what you restore with Recuva depends on what files are restored and you Undo System Restore the Same way you did a System Restore

Hope This Helps,
Josh
