So this is my problem. Yesterday morning my laptop couldnt log on due to - user profile service unable to logon message". I did a system restore and when it changed i had a completly new system on my hands. All files gone. If my files are there somewhere, I'd like to find them back please. and i use vista.

Any files that disappeard are not personal files. If you go to system restore and undo what you did, it will go back just the way it was. Files and all.

well, my mavis beacon program etc i could always download again, but my documents, pictures, etc are the ones i need more.

They wouldn't have been Changed Unless you deleted the User Profile at C:\User\(Username) Then you Files will be Deleted and you will end up with that error you Found and System Restore will make a New Username Area For you

before i do the undo system restore- my problem before that was i couldnt log on to get to my desktop. would i go back to that issue after undoing the restore? and richard, where did u go to?

Okay And If you Undo the System restore then you will not be able to Log in and you will not get any of your Files Back so it will be Pointless

Try recuva, in my earlier post, and stop using the computer unless you have to. Every time you use it, more difficult to restore the files.

thanks richard and guys. i used recuva and found most of my stuff there. Somehow the few on my desktop were not visible at all but i have what i needed. tanx again.
