Sorry, the Vista upgrad advisor is no longer available. The advisors are used as marketing tools, they are pushing 7 now.

If you can upgrade to Windows 7, I see no reason why you cannot upgrade to Vista. Try the 7 upgrade advisor.
If you pass the upgrade advisor, even though it will not be an issue, check your specs against required specs.

ok, thought it looked that way with the adviser,

the reason i was going to install vista over 7 was windows mail, with 7 not having anything (dedicated) and i wouldn't like to use the windows mail hack just in case there was another update that crippled it, as my mum has only been able to use OE to keep in touch with me when I'm away to work

I didn't realize that - but glad you knew enough not to try what apparently doesn't work even if still offered in many places. I didn't realize it required a connection to Microsoft to function (that's good to know and means these products are all essentially worthless).

In that case, the only option seems to be what Richard suggested and hope that being upgradable to W7 does mean it is upgradable to Vista (plus checking the Vista Compatability Center for the individual hardware devices and installed software at: Windows Vista Compatibility Center.)

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

7 is Vista under the hood, just go to the Windows 7 update and if its good, you will be good for Vista. Just check out the minimum requirements to be extra sure.

thanks rich, looking at the minimun spec, i'm sure the pc has 1GB of RAM IIRC, and upgrading it would cost a bit now with it being socket A MB
