Losing Free Hard Disk Space

Hi,

Recently I have been noticing my free hard disk space disappearing. It was around 80GB, and now it is nearer 70. During this time I have actually been uninstalling programs and removing files, so the disk usage should be noticable less, not more. When I check the sizes of the folders in the root of the drive (c:\), they add up to about 26GB. However the disk usage under the properties for the whole drive are 40GB. Can someone help me to find where this free space is going?

I am on Vista Home Premium 32bit.

Thanks,
Alex

It is most likely System Restore points and shadow copies, which is the way the OS is suppose to work.

In addition download this free software to see what is on the hard drive.

Hi,

Thanks, that was the problem. Strangely, System Restore was turned off. But all I did was turn it on, then off again, and clear the copies out with Disk Cleanup and this seems to have fixed it.

Thanks,
Alex

What you did was delete all the restore points. Make a new one now. It may be needed and then you will be sorry that they are gone.
