Sleep Problems

Hi, new here. For the life of me, I have read all sorts of ways to fix my computers sleeping problem with no luck. I need very straight forward instructions, please. From start menu-sleep, the computer shuts down and restarts again. Comes up with the black screen (safe mode) and restarts. If I leave the computer alone, it will also go through the steps, screen saver, sleep, shut down and restart. by its self. I have played in Power Options as well with no luck. To let you know I have Avast and have posted on there forum and was sent to you, by a link to VistaForum-(sleeping problems) (I thought that was nice) Anyways, not sure what other info you may need: Vista Business-32bit-SP2-CPU 3.20GHz-1.5GB RAM
Thanks, ckiwi

Device Manager, no yellow signs.
Edit: I have read up to page 20 with no solutions to my problem with the computer, not staying asleep.

Make sure your keyboard and mouse go off in the power settings which is in the control panel.

Still cant get computer to sleep, following Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems. Tried the suggested DriverBoost and ErrorTech with both wanting money to continue. You should state this when advising people to go to these downloads. Now I have to try and remove them. Not happy. To go through all those steps was a waste of time. Are there any other options to making the computer sleep and stay asleep. Seeing as I am in a bachelorette suite, I have been shutting off the screen to make the room dark at night. Is this ok for the screen and would it be ok to just shut down the computer each night? I am a new, mature leaner at computers and to go the command prompt alone, scares me.

What are the pay download that you refer to? All I see is Lorien referring you to one of our great tutorials and my suggesting a particular section.
Did you take advice from another?

And this does not show when I am signed in? I took them as another way to help the computers sleep problems? Did someone sneak in advertisement? Strange. I thought I had fixed the problem, following your proper advise lol and got down to Step 8 #2. System configuration and Selective startup was already checked so I checked Normal and the sleep worked. Tried again and sleep did not work, and Normal was unchecked again. Then it stays about going through the start up items to see which one is preventing the computer to sleep. Tried again the sleep and not working. The computer hangs for about 3mins on a blue screen? that is new. Also, some where i read about the Network Device. I did wonder why the light was always active. So maybe need to look at that also, but will wait for your advice. When I did get the computer to sleep the one time, the light did not flash? Hope this helps you, help me. I will go ahead now and remove the DriverBoost and ErrorTeck. Thank you

hi,
Sorry to interfer, hey hi richc46, you don't think changing the hard drive setting from AHCI to IDE under the bios settings might solve that isse..

cheers

Hi Ashvin, there has been many sleep problems lately in 7. None have reached a definite solution. Many even stay away from the thread. I think that your solution is worth a try. Nothing suggeed in 7 has really worked. If this does not work, we could turn the settings back.

Also check you screensaver settings for how long its put on.. which should not affect the sleep time set on your laptop, there are two different settings one is when the laptop is on battery and the other is when the laptop is on charge hope you are not confused with those two..
I would also recommend that you run a malware bytes scan on that laptop if there is any virus issue blocking that.
Also check your event logs to see if there is any errors recording regarding that if so post the ID to us..

cheers
Ash

My Computer

Hi, sorry I have not checked back in awhile. I am still having sleep problems but one thing i noticed is the flashing light on the computer, only one side flashes now. First part, 3 little squares and next little pic. is (hard to explain) like a little tin with lid? and then, no pic. Hope you know what i am meaning lol. The light on the comp. on the left side. Does this help any. As before the lights were constantly flashing (meaning something is still searching?) I have just been turning the screen off.
Thanks ckiwi

My Computer

hi ckiwi,
Are you from New zealand, just asking because of the "kiwi" nickname lol.. ok in short whats happening is that the laptop goes to sleep or hibernate when it needs to "meaning at the set time" but do not come back to life when you press enter.. You know some laptops you need to actually press the power button once softly for it to get back to life..

Please summarise the isssue you are experiencing now.. I have a windows 7 administrator's pocket consultant book now.. hope that might contain your solution..

cheers
Ash

My Computer

Hi Ash

I will try and explain what the computer is doing.

*start menu button
*start menu-sleep button, both shut down computer and light activity stops for about a min. then wakes up, going into, black screen safe mode, and starts up.

Power Options Set to:
*sleep in 2 hrs
*turn off display in 1 hr
*screen saver on in: 40 min.

Power Options:
*balanced, change plan settings/changed advanced power settings:

*hard disk: turn off hard disk after 60min.
*sleep, sleep after 120min
*usb settings, disabled
*power buttons and lid, Power button action set to sleep. Start menu power button set to, sleep.
*display, turn off display after 60min. Adaptive display set to ON.
*multimedia settings, when sharing media set to: allow computer to sleep.

Hope this helps you, help me. Also, I read somewhere about the light on the computer is always active? Mine is also active all the time. But, when the computer shuts off for the minute, the light is not active. Maybe something is constantly running and not allowing the computer to sleep?

Thanks, ckiwi

lol, no I am not from New Zealand.

EDIT: this is not a laptop, desktop? Computer will not stay asleep.

Hi guys, i dont mean to butt in but something is standing out for me.

ckiwi you have say you have 1.5Gb of ram which means there is a good chance they may be different speeds (Normally this is ok & your computer will default to the slower of the two & have no problems for a very long time, if not forever)

If by chance your machine is a Hewlett Packard, I had this scenario with mine starting with 1.5Gb of ram, i pulled the 512mb stick & no more sleep problems.

Rather than me doing a whole lot of key tapping i have copied the relevant posts that i made;

My problem was sleep mode would work fine once then the second time the monitor would shut down but the hard drive remained active and nothing would wake it. so i would shut the power button down and restart it. as soon as i pressed the power button it would drop into a proper sleep state and then reboot (almost like initially it got stuck half way dropping into sleep) like i say after reboot sleep would work fine once but not a second except when running solely AC power or solely DC power sleep malfunctioned straight away. anyway i tried everthing including formatting and reinstalling windows, updating drivers, different power modes, setting bios back to default then today i opened the case dropped out the cmos for 10 mints problem still there so i removed the memory sticks put only one back PROBLEM SOLVED! put the second stick back in problem back again so all along the problem was one of my memory cards even though no memory problems were displayed in sys. info or with windows memory diagnostic tool. well i hope my experience can help someone else who has not yet resolved thier sleep problems (or mabee check the easy things before reinstalling windows like i should have):sarc:

Hi i am back again and am really at a loss and hoping this may trigger something for someone. i obtained a replacement memory card and the problem was back again now i have tried all different configurations for this and come up with the same results basically:
1Gb of ram sleep mode works fine.
1.5Gb of ram sleep mode works once ok then after that it fails as per previous post
2Gb of ram sleep mode doesn't work at all.
This problem seems to have arisen about two weeks ago as prior to this i had no problems and had operated on 1.5Gb of ram for over two years, I only have option S3 and says other options are not hardware supported I re enabled hibernation today it did not make any difference although it works ok. am not really expecting any miracles on this as i have exhausted pretty much what everyone else has tried i just thought that the memory card thing might jog something in someones memory, here's hoping.:(

Just an update and i finally have resolved my problem so i am posting this in hope that it may be of help to someone else. in my quest i have found this is a very common complaint with HP F500 series notebooks which just happen to ship with nVidea graphics cards, time and time again in both forums it came up that this problem was not happening when only one stick of ram was inserted (i used 3 different sticks alternately and they all worked fine one at a time but when i inserted a second stick no matter what configuration i had sleep mode problems again) so i jotted down the specs of my newest one and went and ordered an identical ram stick inserted the matching pair and now i have my maximum ram back and fully functioning sleep mode. so i still dont know what caused the problem but i have finally found my solution :D I only hope that my experience can help someone else.

Hope this is of some help
