OMG! The exact same thing just happened to my brother's computer. It must be something Microsoft have done, or something that has happened recently for us to both have this exact same change at the same time. I am still working on it at the moment, and I will tell you how I fixed it if I did. I can give you our general advice soon, (too busy tonight) but it did not work for me. It is so odd!

Anyway, welcome to the Vista Forums!

Richard

Don't know if it's any help but laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L300-29T and its about 10 months old. It has also been going slow and pausing for a week or so.

My Computer

Could be a virus or malware
Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run malwarebytes. Run the full scan and be sure to update prior to scanning.
While Rich tries to find a solution, using the approach that it is something that MS did, lets just be sure it is not due to something some Virus writer did.
I doubt that this will result in a positive finding, but its best to be sure. I became suspicious when you mentioned the slow performance for about a week.

Richard talked about common tactics that didn't help, and this is most likely one of them, but perhaps it will resolve your problem as it is the first thing I'd try in your situation:

Do you know when this problem began? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began (and give it a few extra days just to be sure - maybe back to the point where you noticed it became slow). Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed and uninstall any software you removed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

P.S. You can get Malwarebytes that the other Richard mentioned at: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php.

i did an AVG virus scan about 3 hours before it happened that came back with no warnings or viruses, the slightly rubbish laptop also went in for repair on its hard drive in April this year

Sounds like malware, run malwarebytes, not looking for the same thing.

Then start with 3-4 days ago (before the incident you described). If that doesn't work, go back maybe 2 weeks and try again. After that I'd probably just write off the option as one that isn't going to work in your case.

OMG this is so strange! My brothers computer had two problems. UAC turned itself on, but the checkbox was UNCHECKED in Control Panel, and I could not turn it off. I fixed this by fixing the EnableLUA value, which had been completely deleted from the registry. Last night, I went to have a look at the Themes, and it was definitely NOT in the list. Current Theme, and Windows Classic were the only options.

So today I have more time, and I to the C:\Windows\Resources\Themes folder, and AERO is there! Odd. So I go back to the Themes dialogue, and Windows Vista has reappeared in the list! So I select it, and the problem was solved. I did nothing! I will try and help you though. Please humour me and re-check your Themes dialogue. I know it was empty, I totally believe what you said (after all it happened to me) but maybe the problem has resolved itself. If this does not work, try System Restore as suggested by Lorien, and maybe Rich (I forget who suggested it!)

If not, run an SFC scan, restart, and re-check themes. Please then follow the top yellow box, and upload the logs is Integrity Violations are found. However, no Integrity Violations were found for me, but we need to check.

Please tell me what lies in the C:\Windows\Resources\Themes folder.

Thanks!

Thanks niemiro and everyone that helped vista theme is now back, but its still slow and keeps pausing.

That is good news! Right, slowness issue: Please run TFC:

Preparation:
tfc_icon.png
TFC (Temp File Cleaner) - Download here or here - Homepage
Why? This will remove unneeded temporary files from your system, make automated scans that follow run faster, and save you time. Many infections also load from a temporary file location.
  • Download TFC to your desktop, or other location.
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Hello everyone i am currently on a friends computer as laptop has broken, when i turn it on after it says Toshiba it's just a black screen then after about 10mins restarts its self and does the same. It is still under warranty so I will contact Toshiba tomorrow and will probably go into repair for the second time this year.

My Computer

What bad luck! Sorry to hear that but I'm glad to hear it's still under warranty so you should be OK. If you can find a way to backup your data first, that would be a good idea as they may wipe the drive during the servicing.

You can use Knoppix http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html with a good ISO copier like: http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm along with a blank CD. This should give you enough access to the system (if you can't get in any other way like safe mode) to backup your important data. If that doesn’t work, try slaving the drive to another computer and recovering the data using that other computer to access the disk.

After all that, it decides to do this to you. I almost can't believe it. It's quite possible the two problems are related - though I'm not quite sure exactly how - you should tell them about this problem when you explain the other in case it helps give them a clue as to what might be wrong.

Good luck!
