Screen goes not quite black

Hello, I have an HP Pavilion dv6700. I am not a computer person. When I start up my computer sometimes the screen is black but you can just see in the background the log in prompt. The cursor doesn't show. It is more like a black see through curten where you can just see the play being acted out on the other side. The Geek squad told me to take the battery out...which works most times. I was just wondering if there was a better fix or do I just need to deal. Yesterday, for the first time, the screen blanked out when I was on the internet. I apologize if this has been addressed but I also thank you all for any help that you can give me. Thanks!!

It seems maybe the back light, or power converter has gone out.
