Vists sstp miniport

Do you mean the WAN device itself or are you talking about the device driver or is there some other software and/or firmware also involved? Does the driver show up in Device Manager with an error symbol or something like that (or is it missing entirely)? What is the manufacturer, make, and model of computer (and if you can give me info to get to your specific PC on the website that would help - like if a Dell the Service Tag number)? What is the manufacturer, make, and model of the miniport? When did this happen? Do you have any idea why it happened - did you change something or install something or do anything to make it "uninstall"? Did you restore the computer to factory settings or do some other type of repair? I'm trying to figure out how it became uninstalled in the first place (determining the cause) so I can see if there is some type of problem that needs to be addressed before "reinstalling." What have you tried already and what problems have you encountered doing it - I mean exactly what have you done to try to "reinstall" it and where exactly does the process fail and do you get any error messages?

Just to be sure we're talking the same language, what exactly is "devcon"?

Thanks!

Here is what I did. The system kept rebooting. I narrowed it down to the SSTP device. Then googled it once I knew it was that and found the information below. I deleted the SSTP miniport driver but now I can not reinstall it using the process that he stated he used. The devcon file he recommends to use does not work with vista. Thank you. I would really hate to reinstall.

I have solved this problem. Now Microsoft confirms this to be a problem (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/948263 ) which you can ignore apparently, except when it causes a Blue Screen of Death.

You have to 1st remove the SSTP miniport entry, and then get Vista to put it back. ( this Fix applies to Vista Service SP1)

1st to stop the BSOD, Start Vista in safe mode,
----------------------------------------------
Go to Control Panel, Administration Tools, Services, and find the service

"Remote Access Connection Manager" (the service that looks after Dial Up connections and VPN's).
Set this to DISABLED. This stops if trying to launch under normal mode, which triggers the "Blue Screen".

To remove the errant SSTP Driver
--------------------------------
start Vista again.
Use the following commands to be carried out as the user Administrator (Run as Administrator) from Command prompt (cmd):

"netcfg -e -u ms_sstpminiport"

This ReMOVES the entry.

To Replace the SSTP entry (without which the Remote Accesss Connection Manager Service" cannot Start.
-------------------------

Reboot your PC, start Vista as normal,

Download DEVCON, a command prompt dev tool from Microsoft. Devcon is available here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272
Download the ZIP file, and put it somewhere handy like C:\windows\system32 to save having to put a path when you run it. If you have a broken dial up, you have to download this from elsewhere before you start.

Run Command Prompt (using the Run As Adminstrator Option).

Type the command :

devcon install c:\windows\inf\netsstpa.inf ms_sstpminiport

Watch the command for it finishes. If it errors, dont worry, it needs a reboot yet, and some of the commands cannot finish while your logged on.

Reboot the PC.

Go to Control Panel, Administration Tools, Services, and find the service

"Remote Access Connection Manager" (the service that looks after Dial Up connections and VPN's).
Set this to Manual (or Automatic).

You should find that this service can now start (if it has not already. My 1st run at this fix, set the start of the service back to Manual when I ran the devcon). You should find that the Dial Up functions are now back online, and the blue screen is just a memory that has gone. Took me 2 days to get to this point, but its better than a re-installation from scratch. PC now works with no issues.

Do you know when this problem began (when you did this procedure)? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates. Hopefully that will return you to the situation you were in before you did that procedure. Devcon does not apply to Vista and I don't know what it did, but hopefully this will get you back where you started - hopefully with the original driver installed (and perhaps with the original problem again - but we'll deal with that). If that works, we can then proceed to address the original problem a different way - by simply installing updated drivers in Safe Mode (since it seems you were able to use Safe mode even when the problem was occurring in normal mode).

I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes and we'll try to simply update the drivers rather than use this procedure which I've never seen before and do not recommend.

Good luck!

System restore files are corrupt, so I either need a way to reinstall this file or have to reinstall, thank you. I thought maybe there was a way to remove all networking in vista like you could with 98 and then reinstall but does not look like it.

Have you tried to simply update or install the device driver in the normal fashion as if adding a new device (as opposed to this incorrect devcon process)? If not, give that a try.

If that doesn't work, click on Add New Hardware in Control Panel and ask it to search for new devices and see if it finds the miniport and asks for the drivers. If so, provide them as requested (you should have them from trying to just install the drivers directly) and see if that resolves the problem.

I hope this helps. Post back if you need more help/details with these two procedures.

Good luck!
