Last week I reset my password to keep my teenager from visiting naughty sites. But in my haste I forgot to write the bloody password down and now I can't remember what it is! After trying every password I could think of, to no avail ,I did some googling (on his account) and can't seem to find out how to reset the password. Mine is the only admin account, and I can't download anything like Ophcrack because I am on my sons account!
So I tried going into safe mode with command prompt, typed in new user user*, and from there I get lost. Not even sure I would've accomplished anything this way! Anyone have any suggestions? mine is a Vista home computer.(32 bits?)

Re: Reset User Account Password

Carol,

No, it's not to hard. You basicallly just download the CD ZIP file and unzip it for the CD ISO file. Afterwards, you use a ISO program to burn the CD ISO file to a DVD to use. That's all. I have a good ISO program listed in Method Three to use if you like.

The download website has good instructions to follow on how to do this.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

what if you can't download anything?!? I am on my sons user account, and have access to NOTHING. Someone mentioned hitting the F8 key at start up and going into safe mode with command prompt, but I get a little lost from there. I got that far and typed in cmd.exe, pressed enter, and am lost from there. But if the computer gives me this access, shouldn't I be able to change the password from here? I am a bit pc illiterate, so bear with me!

Hello Livngdedgrl, and welcome to Vista Forums.

If you remember your old password and have a retail Vista installation DVD or a Vista recovery disc (not a OEM factory restore/recovery disc), then you could do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before you changed the password to undo it and restore the old password again.

Afterwards, you can change the password again, but be sure to write it down this time though. ;)

Hope this helps,
Shawn

This happened to me too and I had to do a system restore---be interested to know if there is a better way....

Hard to understand that you had the same issue as the original poster, OP.
Please tell me how to do a system restore if you forgot your admin password ?

I used system restore disc...how do you do a system restore?

Perhaps you were talking about System Recovery which would require a disk that came with the computer.

System restore is another application which is included in the Windows OS.

Start > Control Panel > classic view > Backup and Restore Center......

Hello Djch129,

You can do a system restore at boot using either a retail Vista installation DVD or a Recovery Disc (this is not a OEM factory recovery disc).
