JAVA problems in VISTA?

JAVA PROBLEMS (sorry - I made this up in Word with Screen Shots of what I see through this process but I do not know how to post Screen Shots here)

Dell Inspiron 1420 – Vista – Microsoft Security Essentials – Internet Explorer

Java was downloaded and working but then stopped working. It has always worked before and now suddenly will not work. Java was on the taskbar but has disappeared. Have downloaded Java several times today.

When first downloaded the symbol/icon is on the taskbar but then goes away after a minute - do not know if Java works during that minute??

Going to TOOLS – INTERNET OPTIONS – ADVANCE – I do not see Java anywhere on the list.

Opening Control Panel I see Java is there. Goes away when I uninstall - back again when I install.

Going to Programs and Features Java is there and I have uninstalled several times to download again and again.

In Windows Firewall Settings I cannot find a way to add Java to Exceptions. I have browsed but then Java does not show up in Programs in a way that allows me to add it to Exceptions in Firewall.

When I click Java Control Panel and Default Java for Browsers there is a check by Microsoft Internet Explorer but the words are semi transparent - not black like other words - telling me it is not on for some reason???

When I verify that Java is installed and working I get this from the Java website….

And a window opens showing this information…….

Java Plug-in 1.6.0_21
Using JRE version 1.6.0_21-b07 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM

q: hide console
r: reload policy configuration
s: dump system and deployment properties
t: dump thread list
v: dump thread stack
x: clear classloader cache
0-5: set trace level to <n>

At first the Java icon/symbol is on the Taskbar but after about a minute it goes away. Each time I ask the Java website to verify the icon comes back and the above window opens again but then after about a minute the icon disappears again.

There and not there

My guess is this is some sort of security or firewall issue that I cannot find. No warnings or alerts pop up to tell me that security has detected anything or is doing anything.

Thank You cwl7454 - I am sorry my post was not totally clear - I have been to that Java site many times and tried to do everything they say to do but I get nowhere. I have printed out what they say to do and gone through it all over and over again but I get nowhere. I have tried to find some sort of Java expert forum but all I can find is forums for programmers - which I am not. I am sure there is something I am not aware of but I cannot figure out what it is.

I think I may have found an answer. I found another forum with a thread about this that has been going on for a couple years – which is how long they have been trying to find an answer. No one seems to know the cause of the problem. Is it Java? Is it IE? Is it Vista? Unknown. But there are a number of solutions which may or not work. Here is what worked for me. So far Java is working on our computer.

I uninstalled Java but then went to START and wrote regedit on the start search line and clicked to open

Under regedit clicked on HKEY_CURRENT _USER and then SOFTWARE and scroll to JAVASOFT and delete it.

Do the same under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and SOFTWARE and JAVASOFT and delete it.

I think the idea is to remove everything and anything having anything to do with JAVA from the computer.

NOTE that I went to the Java website to find out how to do this and the instructions they provide are not what actually happens in my computer – but I have no idea why or why not.

Here is the link to the thread where lots of tips about this problem are offered – the one I used is below………

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/InternetExplorer/thread/e58074bd-f7a0-4169-b6fe-fcb0fcbd0e51

Hit Start then type regedit in the box.

HOTKEY_CURRENT_USER SOFTWARE then delete the Java Soft.

Do the same thing for HOTKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE.

Then go to tools Internet Options, set all advanced settings back to default.

Download your Sun Java and save to desktop.

Close your browser.

After you have restarted IE open - Tools - Manage add-ons - enable and the Sun Java will work.

Hi BrianSue,

Congratulations on finding a resolution to the problem. Well done!

In case something like this happens again (where a prior installation fails to fully uninstall properly and thus doesn't let you re-install correctly or at all), then try using Revo: Revo Uninstaller Freeware - free software download and software review - uninstall and clean-up utility from SnapFiles in Advanced Mode and it should FULLY uninstall the application. In fact, I use this process every time I uninstall ANYTHING because it almost always (always for me so far and I've used it a lot, but there may be something out there that actually works completely without assistance) finds something the normal uninstall process left behind.

One thing though - you do need to be careful about what you delete. Revo sometimes (very, very rarely - but it has happened) suggests things that shouldn't be deleted - so just be sure that what you choose to delete is related to the program you are uninstalling and pay attention to what you are doing and you'll be fine. If in doubt, make a note of what it is and don't delete it - you can always then come back and do so manually later if you choose.

I hope this helps.

Good luck and best wishes!
