Heres my problem, I've noticed that the system icons on my start/taskbar tend to disapear and the check boxes for them tend to shade gray and get disabled
(Clock, volume, power, network) is there anyway of resolving this problem

First thing I always try is a system file check.
Go to start,all programs,accessories,command prompt.
Right click and run as administrator,
Type sfc /scannow
When it has finished it will tell you if it found anything,If it did I would run it again.

You should spend some time with the splendid tutorials in the x64 Vista forum.
Here is the tutorial. Scroll way down past the chitchat.
Take Method Three.
Read the simple but necessary instructions.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/106787-notification-area-system-icons.html

Note : If after the tutorial and restart, you still don't see the missing iscons, just go back to the boxes and put check marks on them. The boxes are no longer grayed out.

P.S. If you create restore point in regular basis, you can also get those icons back by system restore, picking the date when they were present and working.
