Suddenly enormous and can't get to DPI

Using Vista on emachine (unit 2 years old). My mother (90) uses it for Word, AOL email, and some browsing. Her text is set for a little larger than average (sorry don't know her DPI).

She was on AOl and (according to her) didn't really do anything and the entire screen went to enormous size. She couldn't go anywhere, do anything as the screen was filled with a letter or two. Rebooted many times (with longer waits between each to hopefully close off anything running in the background that she wasn't aware of).

After many reboots, can find start and resolution is to maybe a 400 size, however, we can't get into system to make resolution smaller . All her desktop icons are gone (assuming to big to fit on screen). Monitor has (had) not been changed. Mouse seemed to work (but can not "ctrl/scroll" to change size), and am able to click on something, if I can find it. If I get to control panel, the words Control Home & Classic View fill left half of page, but can't move down (to get to adjust font). Can sort of scroll down right side, but descriptions are one word on a line. Can not get into resolution (we can sort of get to it thru display, but can't click on it - jumps back to top and takes forever to get there again). Can't make icons larger/med/small as whiteout on dropdown. Much of what you should be able to do is whiteout.

Tried all directions here and found on web, nothing has worked as we can't get to the information they are giving us (dropdown menus), change resolution, etc.

After hours, we are open to any suggestions.

Hello Shag, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You can boot into Safe Mode to then be able to see everything to change the DPI size back.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

When I rebooted, I wasn't given an opportunity to elect to go to safe mode. I just followed your link, but I don't believe I can get to it on her computer during starting. In Vista, is there a safe mode key (like F8) to use to get me to that option while starting? I had tried to restore by a pervious date, but again, was unable to get into restore due to the large text and lack of being able to scroll.

I'm more than a beginner in computers, but certainly not an expert, so your help and time is greatly appreciated.

Shag,

It's a bit tricky with the timing, but as soon as your computer restarts, start tapping the F8 key until you see the "Advanced Boot Options" screen.
