last time when i did a clean install of vista i got a pop up from microsoft in the bottom right hand corner where the tray icons are saying make windows better by joing the microsoft community or something like that. and also when you click on it it says something about sending information to microsoft about your hardware configuration to make windows better

this time when i did a clean install i never got that pop up.

I honestly have no idea. I've gotten that popup every time I've done a clean install as far as I can recall, but I do it so often that if it ever didn't appear I'm not sure I would have noticed. If you're concerned about whether or not you are participating, here's some information about the program and how to turn it on or turn if off if you so choose.

Here's some information about the program should you decide to participate or not participate: Microsoft Customer Experience Improvement Program.

Here are further details on HOW to add participation or remove participation: Frequently Asked Questions.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Since it appears at installation before you've had a change to set anything (and is going off system defaults and I believe is a run once message), I'm afraid I don't believe it has anything to do with update settings. Read the FAQ link I posted above and you'll see the settings for Vista for example are in the Control Panel / System and Maintenance / Problem Reports and Solution / Customer Experience Improvement Settings section. It is located elsewhere for other operating systems (and for Office products) - but not in the Updates section.

Again, I'm not sure why it didn't appear during your clean install, but the FAQ will tell you how to add or remove it - whatever is your pleasure. In fact, I just described where to do it for Vista in the prior paragraph.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

P.S. Nice avatar Simwillis - send me a message about who it is and what he's all about.
