Solved Problems extracting files 64x

Hey all, thanks for reading this. I downloaded a zipped, (and I'm pretty sure encrypted) folder containing 8 songs from a record company's website. When I try to extract the folder I receive the message - The file you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name. - I've tried changing the destination folder's name, and tried extracting the file to other places on the hard drive with no luck. I feel like I'm missing a no brainer solution. Any ideas?

Could you go to regedit (windows key and R, type regedit)
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System,current control set, control, file system.
Take a snapshot of that page or tell me what the value of these two keys are.
NTFS Allow Extended Character 8Dot3Rename
NTFS Disable 8dot3 Name Creation

Thanks

Try downloading 7-Zip 7-Zip and see if it is able to extract the files any better than Vista. The issue isn't the folder name you're sending it to and probably not the location (use the desktop or your Music Folder to make sure) - it has to do with reading the files in the folder and unzipping them (and I doubt the filename is too long, but it may not be valid).

Do you know how they were compressed (did they use .zip or .rar or what)? Why do you think they are encrypted? If that really is the case, you won't be able to extract them or do anything with them unless you can decrypt them - does the compressed folder contain anything like a .txt file with instructions or some type of uncompressed autorun or decrypt or expand command?

Have you considered going back to the website from which you downloaded it (it would help if you could provide me a link to that site - in fact to the specific download you obtained - so I can check myself to see myself how it works and see if I have the same problem and then I can better find a solution and then post it back when I do) to see if they provide any details about the encryption methods or the compression formats or instructions or supplemental programs to get to the files?

I hope this helps - and please send me that link ASAP.

Good luck!

Ilikefree, I have no idea what you mean.

Lorien, the site is Stonesthrow.com. I can't give you a link to the actual page because its a download manager on the website. I purchased to music and then it sits in the DL manager until I grab it. I don't know how they were compressed. I've been told they are encrypted because when I have gotten music in the past, after I unzip the file the text for the document is green. When I try to move the file around it says I don't have permission. I did some research on that and was told they were encrypted, that's why the text is green instead of black. It sounded like a simple fix though, apparently properties - adv. options- blah blah.

When I open the folder and click on a song, this is the info it gives me. Type - MP3 format sound. For a random song the compressed size is 7529 kb. The actual size is 8122 kb. The ratio is 8%, whatever that means. Also is I right click a song, under the method tab, is says deflated.

When I get home tonight I will try gabbing a 7-zip. Thanks for the replies all!

It was my pleasure - glad I could help. I've been using 7-Zip instead of Vista's program pretty much from the start (and since WinZip started charging for their program) and I've been pleased with their results.

Thanks for the feedback - it is much appreciated.

Don't forget to close out the thread by clicking the far right triangular icon at the top of your post and typing "solved" in the box and submitting it. The moderators will notice and put a green check next to the thread title. That way others seeking answers by searching the forums will know that this thread contains a solution to the issue identified in the title - and people seeking to help will not waste time checking out this thread since it has been resolved.

And welcome to Vista Forums! Now that you know where we are, bookmark the site and post anytime you have further questions or problems or if you just want to browse and learn (especially the Tutorial section offers some excellent advice on a wide variety of topics) or even if you want to try to help answer a question if you happen to see one where you know the answer and it hasn't already been posted. While it most likely won't be us the next time (though it might), there are many very skilled, experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly people here who, like us, volunteer their time to help others and one or maybe even several will respond to your post to assist you. While there are other forums on the web that do this sort of thing, you've now found what I think is the best (and I've posted in and/or checked out quite a few) so don't lose this link - you never know when it might come in handy again.

Good luck and best wishes.
