This is not new thread I know, but have done all advised, still no success. Here is my problem:

Some of my folders show the contect on top of the yellow folder-icons, others do not. I want all of them to show the "innards" as the icon flaps open. I followed all instructions, called out a comp.expert, tried and went throght the same motions I did, still nothing, in fact even the folder's appearance we wanted to copy lost the "innards" and ended up looking an empty yellow folder.Folders in question some contain documents, others pictures. I copied them onto memory-stick, took them to my sister's computer (also vista) hers showed all "innards". When I re-insertered stick into my laptop, innards dissapeared again. I no longer dare try anything else, in case I loose the remainer folders' appearance that still show the contents on top of the icons. I DID FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER, have been at it now for almost 4 months! thank you for any replies and help. til

This may or may not help....
Start button > search box, type folder options > press Enter > View tab, UN-check " Always show icons, never thumbnails " > OK

I'm not sure I fully understand what it is that you are no longer able to visualize, but have you tried the following: In Windows Explorer, open the folder that you wish to change, click on Organize, Folder and Search Options, View, + click the Reset button. In the Advanced Settings section also click on Restore Defaults. Then close and reopen IE. This will return you to the default settings, then go back into View and reset your Advanced Settings: Check: Always show menus, Display file size information in menu tips, Remember each folder view’s setting, and UNcheck: Display simple folder view in Navigation pane. (The important part of this exercise is the returning to default and resetting process, followed by closing and reopening IE. Once having done that, you can actually change the individual settings of the Advanced Settings any way you wish --- none of them directly affect whether or not you can see the details you referred to.)

When finished, if these settings hold, you might even go back to View and check: Apply to Folders so that the new settings apply to all of your folders.

Also, as a work-around, you might want to experiment with the settings in Organize, Layout. You can see additional Folders information if you access the Preview Pane, and the Details pane, and by clicking on one or both of these settings, these panes can remain permanently visible.

Can you please open a folder showing us folders that display the information you are talking about and take a screenshot and attach it to your next post. I have nothing above any of my folders and I can't get the system to show anything (and I've frankly never seen anything there before on any computer), so I'd like to see what you're talking about so we have a clearer picture of what you mean.

To do this open the Explorer to a screen showing us folders that display the information you are talking about, then hit the PRTSCR button on your keyboard. Next, go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Paint and double click to open. Click on edit and then click paste and your screenshot will appear. Go to File / Save As and name it whatever you want but save it as a .jpg file to your desktop. Then when you next reply, click on Go Advanced instead of Post Quick Reply and you will see a button for Manage Attachments. Click on it and then click on one of the browse buttons and select the .jpg file from your desktop. When it shows in the attachment window click upload and it will be added to your post.

Thanks and good luck!

If that is what you had been asking, try my suggestion. Might work for you. It does for me.

I think tilda has some text content over the folders (re-read the post and near the end it talks about text above the icons) that doesn't show in your screenshots or on my system either and I think that's what tilda is talking about though it seems to be associated with showing the "innards". That's why I want to see the screenshot to see if I'm correct about that. If so, at the moment I don't know why or how text above the icons is happening (if it is happening).

reply no.3. to djch129: i have done it, over and over again, still nothing. I have been trying it now for over 4 months, together with several other people (one computer engineer) still no luck.
We all think mz "default" programs may be set differently.
In the process I even lost some of those pictures (thumnails) from folders I did have! - instead of getting them onto ones where they were missing! huuuuuh frustrating! many thanks, I did tick your thanks in the middle for taking the trouble, thanks, tilda.

There must be a setting that we have overlooked. Unfortunately I am too dense to figure out which.

Just for the heck of it, would you mind to try, or have you done that already ......

Go back to Folder Options > View tab > at the bottom, click Restore Defaults > OK

Reply to Lorien: see the repy that came from djch129 and you will see the pictures/appearances I have: first the one I do not want and the second picrture as it should be and I am trying to get.
thank you for taking the trouble! tilda, i ticked your box for help!

Reply to Imperfect1: many thanks for taking the trouble: I printed out your advise to make sure I follow it to the word. Made no difference am afraid! I then wrote down all the boxes that were ticked and unticked in advanced for both types of folders, and gess what? they were THE SAME!! yet they did nto appear the same, one stayed "blank" the other with the "innards" i.e. thumbnails.
I still can not get the thumbnails onto the filders however I try - have been at it now for 4 months!
thanks for your trouble, I ticked your box for trying to help.tilda.

reply no 4 to djch129: just did it! still NOTHING! I cannot beleive it myself! neither did the computer engineer I called out - he felt so embarassed, he did not charge me! I think the "default" setting needs changinn in the prgramming, but I dare not touch that! Most annoying thing is that in the process of trying (with the engineer and later with my sister - also a wizzard with pcs) that I lost few more of the thmbnails! many thanks tilda

*** If this problem is the only one that bothers you, perhaps you want to live with it untill someone comes along with a definitive answer.*******

I have been holding this back because ....
1. I am not sure if your user account is corrupted or not.
2. I , myself, have never done it. Although the instructions are quite straightforward, I just might not be able to answer questions if you run into one. I really don't want to throw something to you if I don't know the " inside-out " of the subject amtter.

The following is Microsoft tutorial on ...Fix a corrupted user profile
Fix a corrupted user profile

Note that you need 3 user accounts in order to carry out the fix.
Read the tutorial CAREFULLY. Think about it. Decide if you want to jump in.

Editing :
If this user account of yours is an administrator account. Then make sure you have ANOTHER admin account set up.
On a similar subject, contrary to some other people say, it is a necessary practice to have 2 admin accounts. One for emergency backup.
