MS Config- do I need all this @ startup?

Not even sure what some of these are. I got the PC back from BB yesterday (bad motherboard) and when I booted it up----I noticed, no iTunes. Hmmm. So I looked at the startup, and they had helpfully unchecked iTunes.

That one that says "Microsoft" says Microsoft Operating System. When I got it back it was unchecked, yet it loaded, so it can't be the actual OS..can it?

You could probably uncheck everything but Windows Defender and Kaspersky and still be essentially fine. Nothing there is critical to your system operating. You may want to keep the NVidea entries as they may affect your graphics or graphic controls if not started - but I'm not certain - you can uncheck them and see if your graphics are OK (we can always boot into Safe Mode if there's a problem and recheck the boxes).

The Microsoft one you mentioned is only for Media Center which will start fine if you open it without having this program running in the background - just maybe not as fast. If you find something missing that you want or not working the way you want it to work, or something you actually want opening at startup, you can always recheck the box to add it back.

Most applications there will open without the need for them to run at startup and continue running in the background - many are there to automatically check for updates or simply to start the primary application faster and make it seem more responsive. Test it out and see how things go - removing all these entries is essentially what is done when doing a clean boot which is often used for troubleshooting so doing so yourself is not a problem (and is, in fact, a recommended maintenance and performance-improving procedure).

Remember, it's a simple matter to just check the box to add it back - in the meantime by removing the unneeeded items you'll be cleaning up your system, freeing up RAM and resources, and making your machine faster.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

No, it is not referring to your OS.

Microsoft ®Windows®Operating System C:\Windows\ehome\ehtray.exe
ehome is for Windows Media Center.
ehtray.exe is for Media Center Tray Applet.

That's all I know.

P.S. Perhaps you would want to look for some reviews about BestBuy, particularly about their " geek squad ".

Oh the only reason I went there was I had an extended warranty that is up in 30 days.

That's my next computer in either 2 years or if this one blows up- whichever comes first.

I STRONGLY suggest you avoid ever using "Geek Squad" or similar big store centers for any computer repair problems. They are not well trained, for the most part do not know a whole lot more than a somewhat competent average user, and charge much too much for that level of expertise. Instead, seek a reputable, experienced computer repair shop staffed by professionals who can do the job safely and correctly (or send the computer back to the manufacturer for service).

I hope it doesn't ever come to that, but if so, please take this advice.

I hope this helps. In the meantime, try what I recommended in my first post and see what happens. If you find some features you want missing, then just recheck those entries and reboot. Again, it is perfectly safe as long as you stay just with the startup programs tab - do NOT do this in any of the other tabs - especially not the services tab. If you do that, the only resolution may be a clean installation.

Good luck.
