Solved Can no superfetch hurt my system?

I run a program called Pinnacle studio (video editing software). I found it to be VERY slow operating. That included even the simplest task. I found a program called Enditall, that helped but not enough to satisfy me, plus it stopped my virus checker (not good). Then I found a post by one of the vista forums members (sorry, can't remember the name) via it's search function. It said to stop superfetch. I did that (put it on manual instead of automatic). My system runs VERY fast now, including Pinnacle studio.

Can turning off superfetch cause other problems or even errors?

If you installed EndItAll - Download (from there or elsewhere), I highly recommend you uninstall it as it is not compatible with Vista (as you can see from the above link by looking at the supported operating systems). There's no telling how it might affect your system, change your programs or registry settings or stop necessary or desired processes - which is why things seem faster but there's no knowing the price being paid for that speed.

Here's an article about superfetch: Windows Vista - SuperFetch & ReadyBoost - Ask the Performance Team - Site Home - TechNet Blogs. It is not recommended that it be turned off as it helps memory in a number of different ways (but this is not absolutely required and it is a choice you can make though I suggest you read up on the benefits - and thus the cosequences of disabling it).

As far as the slowness with Pinnacle Studio (I wasn't sure which version you have so I couldn't get more specific than this), perhaps you can get help from their Forum Error or from their Technical Support group Pinnacle Technical Support for North America (it seems their chat option is best as phoning is long-distance, but if you prefer a live person as I do, then the choice is yours). There may be known solutions by changing configurations or other settings or other means we haven't considered. They may have upgrades or add-ons or downloads that address this problem. These are your best options for improving the speed without unknown or unwanted consequences.

In the meantime, try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem. Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

Also, go to Start / Search options and type in msconfig and enter and then double click on the program icon that appears. Go to the startup tab and uncheck any program that you don't need starting at startup. That will probably be the majority of items there - if not most of them (some are needed like the AV program and Windows Defender but most are there to make opening the source programs faster and make you think they're more efficient). This will free up a lot of RAM and help a lot in making your system faster (though perhaps not so much that you'll be able to notice the difference - but maybe depending on how much unnecessary stuff is loading at startup). When I did this on my system I removed over 90% of the entries and suffered no ill effects – to the contrary, I noticed startup was quicker, response times when working were better and I could open more programs at the same time and still have no problems, and shutdown was also faster.

Do Disk Cleanup using: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76073-disk-cleanup.html. Delete as much as you feel comfortable doing – nothing deleted there will harm your system in any way. This includes deleting the Temporary Internet Files. If you want to keep this from building, go to Tools / Internet Options / Advanced and check the box Empty Temporary Internet Files Folder whenever browser is closed and then that folder will always stay empty (except when you're using the program).

Also do an Optimization:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Optimize-Windows-Vista-for-better-performance. Do all of the options (or at the very least, consider them - many can help a great deal).

These last few options are designed to improve performance in general and may make enough of a difference to satisfy you.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I really appreciate your suggestions. I feel that you know what you are doing and advice from someone like you is very valuable.
I created a restore point. I turned off Superfetch. Pinnacle studio runs VERY fast now. If I see any problems anywhere else, I will turn Superfetch back on.
Again, thanks for your help.

It was my pleasure - I'm glad for any help I was able to provide.

A clean boot is perfectly safe - nothing dangerous whatsoever. It is a very commonly used troubleshooting technique. But, of course, the decisiion is yours.

The primary issues you may notice with turning off superfetch is increased boot time, applications starting a bit slower than normal, and increased use of RAM and memory rather than cache (which can slow everything down a little or noticeably depending). You can check CPU and cache usage with Task Manager (right click on the lower taskbar in a blank space in the center section and then click on Task Manager) and go to the Processes Tab and then click on Show all users. I like to sort by CPU usage by clicking on the title bar of that column until the big numbers are at the top. That will not only show your total usage, but which processes are taking up the most memory which can help in managing it.

Thanks for the feedback and letting us know how things turned out.

Don't forget to close out the thread by clicking the far right triangular icon at the top of your post and typing "solved" in the box and submitting it. The moderators will notice and put a green check next to the thread title. That way others seeking answers by searching the forums will know that this thread contains a solution to the issue identified in the title - and people seeking to help will not waste time checking out this thread since it has been resolved.

Good luck and best wishes!
